Do away with the kiddie gimmicks.

Attempt to make an x86 multiplat box. Wait a few more years before releasing it, so that the hardware matures at a reasonable cost. That's all people want nowadays, they don't care about anything else.
Alternatively, it's a system that's part handheld (the controller) and part console (main system). The NX will play one kind of game, which differs slightly from handheld and console mode. Handheld mode offers a rudimentary experience of the game, at something like, I don't know, 480p, while the console mode offers a better experience of said game, at 1080p and potentially higher framerate. The game will choose between handheld and console settings. The controller can be sold separately for those who don't want a controller.

Release as many Virtual Console titles as possible of all the most wanted games, give them a good price point so people will want to buy tons of them. Make sure the selection is GREAT and the prices are GREAT, you should be able to play all the titles people are nostalgic for in one place.
Launch with new exciting releases of 3 or 4 of their biggest franchises, tease 3 or 4 more for release in the months after launch of the console so people are excited

The Game-Pad failed because no one wanted to do anything good with it, and the DS and Wii did so well because most Devs actually tried to so some cool things with it.
Gimmicks are not inherently bad, it's just that they need to be practical, simple to understand, and easy to program with.

Pic related is some Chinese shit released like 2 years ago for $200. Quadcore, like 2GB of RAM. Just a typical mobile GPU probably.
Has HDMI out to a TV. Has a camera. WiFi. On board flash memory. You can run basically anything from N64 on down on it through emulators. Runs on Android so it plays Android games.
These kinds of "hybrids" already exist, they just don't have a Nintendo name stuck on them.

If it's going to have gimmicks, make sure they're intuitive, cheap, and easy to develop for. If even one of those three things don't apply, then it's better not to package it with the console and just sell it as a separate peripheral.
Really the most important thing is just to make sure it's affordable compared to the competition and gets marketed strongly. Wii U's main failing was that they forgot to tell everybody it existed.
