I loved the shit out of Castlevanias since CV1 and SOTN was my top fav but I never really liked Metroid or played it. I didsome thinking on why and it is probably because the whole sience-pop part behind it looks slightly boring and silly to me, like Star Wars setting.
But Environment Station Alpha softened me a bit. let's try this shit without getting bored.
P.S. I hated Axiom verge and its level design and quit it after 32 mins.

okay. nice blog post.
I like Castlevanias more because I prefer melee over ranged
>>329134639
Sometimes I get bored of killing demons and I want to fuck up some aliens instead.
>most of the "enemies" you kill in metroid games are just animals minding their own business in their natural habitat
Spent some time figuring out how to activate fucking Morph Ball.

Really anon?
Really?
>>329135917
It is never mentioned anywhere so it took me a minute. My first thought was holding jump+down, it seemed most logical seeing how similar mechanic applied in many games.

y cant metroid crawl?

US REDDIT RIGHT
So if you spent 5 missiles here on anything but making the path in the block you are soft-locked, right?
So what are the best metroidvania games on steam?
Always reluctant to try them out as indie games have a tendancy to go "hmm Super Metroid is ok.. but I think it should be twice as hard with no real chance of powering up to make anything easier!"
>>329137092
I'm pretty sure that's not possible.
>>329137124
Environment Station Alpha is great if you can get past the graphics.
Axiom Verge is always worth a try.
>>329137124
Environment Station Alpha or valdis Story are good
>>329137241
>I'm pretty sure that's not possible.
I just did.
And I'm unable to return or progress. Old path is blocked by the door that requires 5 missiles to be open and the path forward is on the screenshot.
Essentially I'm locked.
>>329137453
Dont make me bust out my emulator for this OP.
You better find your way out of this.
>>329137378
Started Valdis story, seemed ok, but didn't really feel a desire to go back to it. Keep hearing whispers about bosses being bullshit (may have just been that you can get stunlocked by them).
>>329137613
>You better find your way out of this.
I found a way, anon, obviously. DOn't be silly, after all the metroidvanias I've played.
That wasn't my point. At the beginning you have a chance to spend 5 rockets on the closes red door or go back. But if you just shoot these rocket in a wall you don't seems to be trigger the event when enemies spawn and shit. And there is nowhere to find more rockets. So you are essentially locked

Try out Rabi Ribi if you can get past the pandering.Still refunded it after beating the ice girl, fuck that anime bullshit.
Can someone actually confirm something for me.
I'm convinced it's possible to drown in Super metroid.
In the glass tube bit I did that without the gravity suit, pissed around for ages trying to break the game and get further than I should then suddenly all my health drained (at roughly the same speed as the rainbow beam) and I died.
Did the game glitch out for me or is drowning something that can happen?
>>329137970
>I'm convinced it's possible to drown in Super metroid.
But you cant.
Unless you mean in lava.
>>329137970
No, drowning isn't possible as far as I know and I fucked around in Maridia for half an hour without the suit.
>>329137878
>Rabi Ribi
How's the difficulty? Looks fun but I've a low frustration tolerance (I'd rage as a kid, as an adult I don't won't to give myself a stroke). Japanese indie isn't known for smooth difficulty curves.

>Japanese indie isn't known for smooth difficulty curves.
I've never heard of something like that before, can you elaborate?
>>329138141
>>329138116
Maybe I got trapped in the scenery which somehow triggered lava levels of damage (was a lot faster than lava though) then, definitely did die and it was during a jump in an innocuous area.
>>329138217
It's tough but firm. Every death essentially feel like its your fault and not the game's.
>>329138338
>I've never heard of something like that before, can you elaborate?
LA-MULANA
>>329138338
Insanely difficult tohous, hell in Cave Story, La Mulana, there was another bunny girl metroidvania that was supposedly ultra hard.
>>329138486
Well that's just one game. Anon spoke as if it's a recurring trend.
>>329138596
>Insanely difficult tohous
Touhou might be hard but it still has a decent difficulty scale.
>>329138426
If you're struggling does the game give you avenues to stop you hitting (your head against) a brick wall lots of secret upgrades or levelling.
>>329138828
Just looked up some reviews.
The bosses level up with you. Shit mechanic is shit.
>>329137832
The trigger is picking up the missiles.
shenron is that you
Am I missing something?
>>329140727
Yeah.
An item to get past that.
>>329140727
Yes. A Brain
>>329141083
Well, I found a trick that if you chain jumps precisely you can actually "walk" on these blocks but once I did reach that blocked door I hit dead end.
>>329141209
careful with these edges
>>329140727
>>329141660
I got stuck on this for hours as a kid before the internet, have fun.
>>329137634
Valdis is pretty ok, the art is really pretty and some of the bosses can be pretty tough to beat, I only remember one case of getting Stunlocked against an enemy and that was pretty late into the game and only one enemy does that (still took me like 40 minutes to get past that, shit's unfair). Maybe try giving it another go if you are bored one day.
