this is true though...

its not all because of microsoft though.

intel doesn't want to make drivers for "old" operating systems, so microsoft cant certify something that isnt there... thus no support.

Plus MS/Windows has controlled the PC gaming market for quite some time. Once the Xbox came out, they dropped it like a hot potato.

Windows users are just acting like they're the only thing that exists as usual. This is just the fact that Windows 7 is a legacy platform past its mainstream support date catching up to the Windows-only crowd. All new hardware will still be supported on Linux.

The recommended way to run Windows now is as the guest in a virtual machine hosted on Linux now anyway. Its the only solution that allows you to guarantee that there is no data leakage.

Kill? No, Linux is now turning into a nice gaming platform. They could however rob us of years of progress in the PC gaming space. Microsoft is a console company first when it comes to gaming. Never forget that.

As it is now if you want to keep using a desktop version of Windows you're stuck not just with outdated APIs but also with obsolete hardware. Long term that means that we're heading into a rough transition period where learning to use compatibility layers or virtual machines will be essentially required for PC gaming.

The upside to all this? Linux is a niche platform and Microsoft's attempts to kill PC gaming will bring it out of the mainstream and we'll return to a golden age of only enthusiasts playing PC games.

All this means is Microsoft won't officially support those CPUs. It doesn't mean the CPU companies themselves can't provide support or that other OSes are locked out of using those CPUs. If that were the case Microsoft would get shit on by antitrust lawsuits again.

>>324455407
Nobody is forced to upgrade just because Microsoft doesn't officially support an OS, it just means they won't put out official bug fixes for it anymore.

So let's get this straight.

This is news published today on only one website, and products have been sold for 6 months. Is that to imply that nothing was sold and everything was returned within the first months or that there are more negative consumer reviews than positive for such products?

Nobody ever mentions that Intel actually does their own CPU driver updates, and not Microsoft? The fact if a product that relied on microsoft operation systems would just make Intel and Microsoft loose instant billions.

This is why I don't read blogs son.
>>

Apparently AMD is doing the same thing

I fucking called this, though. I fucking knew that if MS didn't get the upgrade numbers they wanted through the ads and shit, they'd just shrug, say 'Fuck it' and force us to.

I'm still on a 3570K Ivy Bridge and it's running fine.

Who here is even going to buy Skylake early, if at all?

If you buy a chip right now, are you going to install Windows XP?

Most Skylake early adopters are already running Windows 10.1 - everyone else will be asking if they "should buy Skylake now or wait for the new ones coming out" years from now. At that point, they will all be using Windows 10 too.
>>
>>324455685
Its not AMD doing it. Microsoft has decided that since 7 is in its security fixes only phase of support that means no new CPU hardware features. This shouldn't really be surprising though, Windows 7 has CPU performance bugs with AMD's bulldozer hardware that have never been properly addressed, there was no way they were going to add support for Zen.

CPUs are more fundamental to the system. AMD can't fix this on their own without Microsoft's cooperation, but their only interest is making people buy Surface tablets.
>>
I like this virtual machine thing that one anon was speaking of. Microsoft finally pushed me over the edge this year. I don't want to use it anymore. I too recently switched to Windows 10. The fast and familiar interface coupled with that boost in performance meant I just couldn't say no! It's even designed to work with the hardware and software I already own. Recent, brilliant innovations like Cortana and Microsoft Edge complete this amazing package.

Have you used virtualization software recently? Unless you have a shitty Intel system that doesn't support the features required there's basically 0 performance penalties. Only limitation is you have to pass through your graphics card but you can run multiple guest OSes in that virtual machine so basically you have your gaming stuff isolated and you don't have to reboot.

Well, you're half right, but you should be running Linux in the virtual machine and using PuTTY to get in, not the other way around. This way you get the versatility of the Linux platform together with the stability and advanced power management features of a professional OS like Windows 10. Alternatively, you could buy a MBP. :^)
>>

>>
>>324457559
Allowing Windows direct hardware access means that you have no control over what it does with that hardware. You really don't want Windows 10 having access to the outside world without oversight.

>>324457114
>there's basically 0 performance penalties.
That's almost impossible considering you're emulating an entire system on top of another system.

You'll probably need a new system. I'm planning to build a Zen/Fury system later this year, though by that point we may have an equivalent to Gallium Nine for DX11 software and/or a lot more native Linux games which might make running a virtual environment overkill.

For Windows users who don't know, Gallium Nine is a thing for running old DX9 software better on Linux than on modern Windows.

No you're not. You're virtualizing it, not emulating. You aren't having to emulate an x86 cpu, you're already running it on one, and with GPU passthrough you have full speed graphics card access.

How can Microsoft force this? All of their corporate customers have volume licenses with downgrade rights. Intel and AMD can still release drivers for Windows 7 if they wanted to. The only thing I can think of is driver signing.

Microsoft has seriously shaken up how driver signing works starting with Windows 10. The only way to sign any new driver in a way that Windows 10 will accept is to upload it to Microsoft over the web and have them cross-sign it along with your original signature. It used to be that as long as you had a certificate which came from a root CA that was cross-signed by Microsoft then you could sign it yourself and Windows would accept it as valid.

Now Windows 10 checks the time stamp on the driver and if the time stamp is earlier than July 29th, 20015 (the date Windows 10 was released) then Windows 10 will accept the old cross-signed root CA. If its after that date then only drivers that are directly signed my Microsoft are accepted as valid by the OS.

So how does this affect Windows 7? Windows 7 will accept certificates with either SHA1 or SHA2 (aka SHA256) for USER MODE signature check (aka .exe and .dll files.) For kernel mode drivers, Windows 7 will only accept SHA1 certificates. So all it takes is for Microsoft to stop providing SHA1 hashes via their driver signing website and then you instantly lock out any new kernel mode binary from being able to load on both Windows 7 and Windows 10. That doesn't prevent someone that still has an old SHA1 code signing certificate from using it to sign Windows 7 only drivers. But most of those certificates are expiring in the next year or two, if they haven't expired already. Intel/AMD/etc could probably release drivers for maybe 1 more silicon generation before their old certificates expire and they lose the ability to release Windows 7 drivers without submitting them to Microsoft for approval.

Basically Microsoft is using code signing to create planned obsolescence for Windows 7.

It's not a problem really. They're not going to push this stuff forward until we start seeing consoles adapt this technology. They've kinda screwed the pooch throwing them up too early. So I get the feeling even middleground hardware will be able to handle most of the stuff coming out for at least another three years. At least processor-wise.

At that point Windows 10 should be in a usable state and upgrading will come with the territory.

Exactly my point when I said basically similar.

Something with a straightforward GUI, folders to store crap, internet browsers to while away hours on facebook and the ability to play video games on it. Hell, throw in video and music production and that's basically 99% of what people use computers for. How hard could it possibly be?

You can't say there is competition that does these things and then point out reasons neither of them are viable at all.

It's a problem with WPF, which is something that Windows 10 uses entirely. It's a UI system that is written in XML, basically. Microsoft has been forcing it as a standard for years, by making sure C++ or anything else using MFS is incompatible with Windows 8/10. That way they forced C# to be the future industry standard, because it's the only viable programming languange you can now use for Windows. WPF is unfortunately pretty fucking bad and the webm displays this, basically what's happening is that the controls weren't made for resizing that much because it was majorly designed for tablets who don't need a responsive UI. So some controls just stay where they are while others are being dragged.
