The point is that they went to the mountain for a bad reason but fell in the hole by chance. The type of play through the player aka "chara" decides to do is what the fallen child's intentions were.

I'm kinda toying with the idea that Frisk may be the player in general. When Flowery talks about his ability to save and reset, hes talking about the game mechanics too. Determination is essentially the ability to 'play the game'. And before you arrived, he basically did just that. He played, he did the nice things and helped everyone out for a while. But eventually he got tired of everyone and how predictable they were, and eventually started doing 'evil' things.
I think he or Chara comment on it as well, that you do some evil stuff simply cause you -can- or that you're curious what will happen.
If you think of it another way, the game is heavily about time travel with the save/load and reset mechanics all being ways to travel back in time. You retain knowledge of events, and to some degree certain characters do as well which changes depending on how you played the game prior and who you're talking to.
It'd also make sense that the player is Frisk simply because of the consequences that happen at the end of the genocide - Pacifist run.
That said, its also a kinda meta commentary on gamers and such as well but thats not really what I'm talkin bout right now.

Storyshift is turning out pretty well, so I'd say that. It's not really a comic though, it's like a retelling of the game with different characters in the same spots. Author said they'd be going through all three endings too, so it'll be exciting as hell once the genocide arc rolls around.
Aftertale isn't half bad either, apart from some slight edge here and there.
