I never really got why people on /v/ had such a problem with Witcher 3's combat. I can understand 1, the larger rpg focus combined with the rhythm game stuff is pretty out there and not to most people's tastes, and 2 was a broken mess of an action game, but 3 was totally fine even if you're just sticking with swords. There's nothing obviously wrong with it, and if you use all the tools at your disposal instead of just your sword it's actually fairly interesting, too. People don't really have any actually coherent critiques, too, they just say that it 'feels' bad if you ask. No one brings up the actual big problem with it (which is how op quen is), which makes me think people on /v/ are coming off of dark souls and just trying to use their swords for everything when that's not what this game is, at all. Because there really is no level design so the combat has to vaguely work in almost all instances given the devs can't really predict how a fight will play out, devs could tweak a castle design till their hearts content in Souls to make the fight interesting however in a world design that aims to reflect "realism" and is open ended filled with fields, woods and mountains you have to implement mechanics that can work well in an uncalculable amount of circumstances, which is why open world games all too often have shit combat or are simply fuck around sandboxes.

I've been playing recently and I think it suffers greatly by how tedious the combat is until you're at least like levels 8-10 and how you can't really explore too much or do contracts until then.
I was pretty angry and unhappy yesterday when I was playing because of this but now that I'm level 10 and have gotten better gear, the game isn't nearly as tedious and can actually really of fun. I tried liking this series but its too dialogue heavy. Having to spend 20 minutes talking to some dude about his marriage problems just so he'll admit he had a dead baby. Not hating on dialogue but this is just too much, and at times i really don't give a shit about a characters background, gime the shit I need to know so I can go kill monsters. but no, the game makes you have the conversations and if you try skipping through them too fast you'll fuck it up and then have to do some fetch bullshit for the character just so they aren't pissed at you anymore and are then willing to help so you can advance the story.

I enjoy DD's combat more because it's simpler and allows me to have fun without stunlocking me at every turn. Climbing monsters is also fun as hell, and the controls are tight as fuck and skill system really solid, even with a M&KB.
Combat doesn't have to be super advanced in order to have fun anyway.
