Don't get me wrong, I did enjoy IX and it's by no means a bad game, it just really didn't cut it for me. I know a lot of people played it as their first FF and I can get why that would elevate it in their eyes, but I still think it's the weakest of the PS1 entries.
Great world though, I just wish they would have done a better job letting us explore it.
The 100% for this game is the single biggest full of fucking shit thing I have ever seen. Even if diligently following a guide you WILL stuff it up somewhere and miss a fraction of a percent.

Some of the actual systems were VERY enjoyable, though. I enjoyed the way that skills were learned from weapons/armor, and the synthesis system. Either of those in a more fleshed-out capacity would really tickle me. I think that honestly one of my biggest grievances about that game was that there wasn't more to do with those, ESPECIALLY their synth system.

I've run several perfect games for IX, but in all honesty that aspect of the system (which was copied wholesale from VI) makes almost no fucking difference to either general gameplay or endgame, because they didn't take it far enough. That's the problem with IX system wise, they took various good aspects from earlier games but watered them all down to the point where the substance is removed.

Perhaps it's a matter of opinion, but the way the game swings wildly from whimsy to dead-faced serious kills a lot of the impact of scenes. The first disc is paced quite well, but it goes to hell after that, you can't honestly tell me that you believe the game is paced well, specifically around the Iifa Tree, and beyond. ATEs or no Amarant and Quina are non characters.

Really, all of the PSX entries felt weak compared to what came before and after. And then PS2 had decent X, fun tie-in X-2, and blandfest XII.
IX had a lot going for it though. In many ways I think it was the most fun.
Best Final Fantasy on PSX was Tactics by a mile.

X-2 is one that I still need to replay before I can make an accurate judgement about it, since the last time I played it was when it came out, but I remember it being very addicting.

Many guides mistake the Miihen highroad episode complete conditions and the commsphere events. Miihen requires specific commsphere time wasting and its just a mess. You have no clue if you triggered the solution or not.
Also, make sure to send Rikku to chase the chocobo and follow her to the specific "spot" in chapters prior.
Lastly make sure Shinra installed every commsphere, dont forget about the mushroom rock road entrance one.
Absolutely OCD triggering. And you have to perfect the rest of the game too just to see if you got it right by chapter 5.
