I played this a little bit but it seemed to be really boring.
I also played 'life is strange' a little bit but found the hipsterishness really grating.
But, I experienced 'gone home' and really enjoyed it, although I realise that it is a one-time stunt.
Undertale, I do not get, I mean, I can see perfectly well that the Emperor is naked, yet I keep hearing how awesome his clothes are (and his fucking soundtrack).

It's the only game to bring genuine tears out of me and fill me with some kinda emotion towards it's story. The characters are charming, the humor's actually good, and for a first game by the developer, the gameplay is refreshing as well.
I feel like the spare mechanics are kind of... rough. Having the same tactic needed to spare Asgore prove to be fatal to people like Toriel, or some characters having to be stalled until you can actually spare them, it makes it seem like a cheap cop-out of an actual way to diplomatically spare them.
But then again, it's Toby's first game. For a first game, it's unbelievably great. I still consider it one of my favorite games of the year, maybe even game of the year, but that's just me. Also, only soundtrack I've bought in ten years.

The characters, story, and gameplay are good, not great, but somehow the combination created something greater than the sum of its parts.

I had a pretty rocky experience playing Undertale. I didn't want to kill anything but Toriel said to show to her that I am strong enough for the monsters and asgore.

I actually enjoyed Undertale. I just think it's pretty eye rolling when the game tries to be creepy, including the 'jumpscare'
There are parts of the game that touch soft spots for me. The story's nothing special, but I like the music and a few a the jokes got a chuckle out of me. If the only reason you don't like the game is because "furries" and tumblr, then you may have a problem.
I thought the game was pretty alright. It didn't resonate with me as much as it did with other people but I can see why so many like it as much as they do.

I think it's a decent 7/10, although even that might be a bit too generous of a score.
The entire Genocide route outside of the only two bosses is awful, the overworld is boring and way too linear, and the combat doesn't have much depth to it at all, making the admittedly cool ideas of bullet hell dodging and pacifist acts wear their novelty off pretty quickly.
The boss fights though are great for the most part, the narrative is clever and entertaining, and the music is superb. The characters don't really have much depth to them, but they can be pretty funny, they're likable enough, and you don't really want to kill them.
I think it's far from a masterpiece, but I think the game is good, at least on a pacifist run.

Here's my two cents about the game. I won't claim it as fact, so feel free to nitpick or even ignore it if you don't care.
+game is pretty original, combining an early Earthbound combat with bullethell. I think that's nice.
-game is way too casual. Even if you grind for Sans and Undyne, their fights aren't that challenging either. They're nice for a change of pace, but getting to them is a bore.
+soundtrack is beautiful and varied. If it was a woman, I'd buy it chocolate and flowers on every date.
+story is full of memorable characters, and I'll admit I love Sans and Papyrus the most. They're quirky, but not random like those filthy Temmie. They're also welcome changes of pace from typical RPG characters. Papyrus being a genuinely fun loving good guy at heart is endearing, even if he's a little haughty.
+game does subvert alot of expectations and is pretty fun the first few times around. It's an interesting retrospective into tropes commonly used in RPGs
-on that note, the story does need to work on its pacing, and I'd dare say it's a little too cinematic in the late game. When I say that, I mean there's just too many moments when you're standing around and listening to someone throw out expository dialogue. It's not that interesting to someone like myself who dislikes heavy story.
+graphically, it's very unique. The in-battle sprites and animations are top notch, and are recognizable, which is good for an indie game
-the overworld graphics are kinda lazy and feel almost rushed. Alot of corridors, not alot to explore, puzzles are pretty casual. I Was hoping Papyrus would be much more adept at it.
Overall, I want to give this game a higher score because I love the music and the characters, but the gameplay suffers from various flaws, so the most I can part with is a 6/10. Interesting, but somewhat unpolished.

Photoshop Flowey is proof that those tropes were freaky as hell before they got overused to the point of joking about it. I'm somebody who really enjoys this game, like 9 to 9.5/10 enjoys it, but I agree about the characters and story.
It really seemed like Toby wanted to tell a story here, but didn't want his game to go on too long, as rpg's are known to do. It's like he deliberately made it short to not overstay it's welcome, and sacrificed making his characters all that deep for that.
And yet, it still connected with me. It's one of the few games that when I start it up and see all the characters again, it's like I'm seeing old friends again. And yes I know that sounds really corny, but a game that manages to get you to connect with and care about characters in such little time deserves praise in my book.

That was sort of my major gripe with it. I didn't feel any sort of connection withAsrielso the final showdown between you and him just didn't hit me like it might have for most other people. It felt like a watered down version of the very last fight inGurren Lagann.

I'm trying not to be biased. The most important thing, I feel, should be the gameplay. I also forgot to mention that multiple pivotal battles in the gameFlowey and Asrielare just glorified cutscenes. That's part of why the score is so low. I know the game is like patting me on the back for not being hitler through that playthrough, but I'd rather the game give me a challenge. Feels and whatnot don't really compare to an adrenaline rush of dodging a billion attacks, or surviving goatboy's ultimate attack where he murders everything in the universe. If I could actually die from that, it would be hype.

You can tell that Toby did take the time to develop them as best he could. I'll gladly give him that. It just needed some minor tweaks, because the game does have some flaws.
I think the biggest flaw is the whole "war on humanity" bit. If a child can singlehandedly genocide an entire race of monsters, then I don't see how Asgore will be able to change that, let alone Asriel. Maybe Frisk is just super determined and one of a kind, I don't know to be anne frank. But there wasn't much of a looming threat overall.

Omega Flowey is actually not that hard because of the gradually lowering damage gimmick, and is very easy for most bullet hell players.
I wish that damage gimmick only showed up after the souls started fighting back and his defense dropped to zero. That way, it'd feel way more hype because it's basically the first good shot you had at the fucking weed, and you were NOT gonna die then. Thus, you probably wouldn't.

I thought it was overall too easy, genocide bosses aside. Asriel is the worst offender. A complete hard mode would be nice.
It was short, but the game probably would have suffered from being longer.
I thought it was a bit pretentious though to make a game about forgiveness and then brand the player for doing evil things across all future playthroughs. I know you can manually delete the flags, but still. There's also a huge number of unanswered questions regarding Sans and Gaster. Like, how much mystery do you need?

It's pretty good. It was one of the best games I played last year, but I also found last year to be incredibly weak with the majority of the good games coming out in the early months of the year. Undertale came out at a time where nothing good was coming out and nothing good came out after it either. And while I did like it at the the time and the demo long before its release I just don't even want to think about it anymore. It's just been shit posted to death, hell this thread was probably made just to shit post it. The only good I can think of it is that I didnt pay for it and everyone who I told to play it I just gave a pirated copy to.
