You can switch between any of the five styles Dante has at will, and can also cycle through all of his available weapons. As for Nero, he's unique enough that it doesn't feel like you're just playing a different Dante. And Vergil is the best feeling Vergil of the games he's playable in. Trish and Lady are just bonuses, really.

I think the combat is the highest point of the series, Dante has style switching so you can switch to Swordmaster, Trickster, Royal Guard, Gunslinger and Dark Slayer on the fly, Nero, the new character, has a neat rev mechanic that involves frame perfect timing and has decent aerial options, Vergil is an all out attacker who is a high risk/reward character since his defensive options are tied to DT so you need to be mindful of how much you use, Trish is pretty basic and revolves around using Sparda and her fists in conjunction with each other to pull of some crazy shit, Lady is all ranged based and she shines there, she has a charge mechanic that beefs up a weapons strength.
Unfortunately 4 is lacking in content outside of characters. It suffers heavily from backtracking and refighting the same bosses, and while the bosses themselves are well designed it can get on your nerves. Generic enemy mooks have less variation but they are more vicious than in 3SE.
Dante doesn't have as many devil arms but makes up for it by being able to switch between three arms at once and three guns, on top of style switching you arguably have more options than in 3 at any given time.
Outside of the final boss and one other I greatly enjoy them and think that Credo is on par with the Vergil fights.
Level design is okay. I don't really think it's obtuse or annoying, the game is built around Nero as a character and what he can do with his Devil Bringer and the levels reflect that.
The story is alright, it isn't some great work of art but serves as a nice connector between levels. I love the banter between Dante and Nero whenever they meet and how they interact with the bosses and while people dislike Nero as a character because he whines in 2 scenes I enjoyed him and think he has potential.
It's a flawed, but enjoyable game and even with the backtracking I replay it a lot. I think it's worth playing thorugh and it feels as satisfying as ever to pull off combos.

Get DMC4:SE first. You can play around with the style switcher in DMC3:SE after that.
I imported it because Capcom made the disc version JP exclusive for some reason. New characters are good but there isn't any new content, so your pretty much playing through the same campaign 4 times.

Style Switching is only as good as the player using it. If I started a game on DMD right now with style switching on I doubt I'd fare much better than with it off. I found the enemies in 4 to be easier than in 3 but that's an opinion from a scrub so take it as you will.

I see where you're coming from, but I think if you're a high level player like the shit you see in combo videos you'll find yourself being able to exploit the style switching for easy set ups. I'm not knocking it because I think style switching is great and the more DMC games that have it the better, I'm just under the impression that it makes it easier than DMC3 was meant to be.
Also I think 4 has more aggressive enemies than 3, I'm almost certain that it's due to Itsuno putting DMC1 enemies in but even the new enemies seem more aggressive than in 3.

I'm not trying to pull a "gotcha" on you here, but you said style switching makes the game piss easy, which simply isn't the case for the majority of players. The effectiveness of style switching is directly proportional to the player's skill, and the only people it'd make the game piss easy for are the people who are already so good at the game that they find it piss easy.
Obviously you've got nothing against the inclusion of the style switcher since you say you're cool with it being included in more games, but you did more or less discourage someone from purchasing another version of 3 in order to use it when really all it does is enhance the fun of the game for people who want to play for style.

Seriously though, sometimes there is a typo on the main screen that says "Misson Select", it would be neat if there was a way to toggle off the timer of BP without mods, and I would have also loved to be a good goy and buy a DMC1 Dante costume.
But it is most likely that DMC4SE was a budget tittle, and they probably spent more money fixing the DmC:SE, so I think it's very unlikely for Capcom to even bother touching 4 again.

Yes its alot of fun.
All the characters play completely different from each other so it's a different experience each time.
the combat i feel is deeper than 3's combat.
some of the levels get gimmicky and the sense of progress isnt as strong as in 3 or 1.
people like to bash it because you have to fight each boss 3 times with some exceptions like some bosses 2 times or only once. they seem to forget dmc1's bosses were all rehashes as well as you had to fight them 3 times as well.

I've never played a DMC game before and this was my first. I think I got halfway through and realized I was just backtracking through the same shit for a third time all over again and never bothered to finish it.
