Kingdom Hearts has metaphysical concepts become reality and affect thus. This is why determination and "I fight for my friends" works--especially true when you wield a magical weapon whose sole power relies on you having ties with others and gaining determination for their sake as well as yours.
Power of friendship makes perfect sense in settings where it actually affects shit and isn't some contrived asspull powerup at the last second. See the Persona series for another good example, where the entire point of the game is to gain power from social links.
Of course, it usually is done incredibly hamfistedly, so that's why it's panned universally unless done in a well-executed manner.

It didn't have the over the top powers of the other games and wasn't as colorful, I can see why people didn't like it. I'd like to see them do an advance wars 2 style system again but with the DoR piloting system, all the other CO power stuff after super CO powers got way out of hand. DoR I think also suffed from too much overlap in CO abilities, Tabitha and Lin served a somewhat similar role as the "strong CO zone but has to build it up" characters, Isabella overlapped with both Will and Gage, etc.
