Because a lot of FGC people didn't grow up with much money and usually had siblings, so when parents got them a game, it had to be one that could be played together.
Fighting games was one of those, and had the added benefit of a lot of replayability. There was also the fact that back then we had arcades, which means you could play for just quarters.

This was back in '99-2000. You didn't truly live a gaming experience unless you played in arcades. Back in summer camp we'd go to Funtime USA and play the games there. They had Silent Hill, The X-Men arcade game, Tekken, I believe Time Crisis, to name a few. It was amazing. 2001 was the last time I went there, I don't know if it was still around.

People always say MOBAs aren't complex, but that's just flat out false. They ARE complex, especially in DotA 2's case. Making them simpler would actually be an improvement. Adding more shit to a game doesn't necessarily make the game better. The average fighting game is much easier to pick up than the average moba. Mobas have an crapload of information to injest just for you to even begin playing the game, it's a lot more difficult to pick up and play League or Dota and enjoy them earlier, not to mention smurfs that run around and basically destroy the game for new players. Not to mention that in League's case it relies on constant, forced changes to keep the game "interesting", meaning that metagames can't form naturally the way they do in fighters.

That's partially what I'm getting at. The game is complex by the textbook definition of the word. There are A LOT of intricacies in MOBAs. Characters, items, random ability interactions, objectives, etc. That does not make them more interesting or dynamic, it just means there's a lot of oftentimes esoteric shit to learn. Mind you, I hate MOBAs, I just don't like blatant falsehoods. It'd be like saying "Fighting games are shit because it's all about memorizing combos", that's flat out fucking wrong. I mean, you're fine to think that fighting games are shit, but your lack of understanding or knowledge of them does not make that the case.
Also frames are not a difficult concept to understand, but they ad a great deal of nuance to the game. Fighters ultimately boil down to controlling space and knocking out the opponent, but there is so much more under that shell, we both know it.
