Blizzard recently made a little change to all accounts: any account can play characters within the Trial Account range.
Here's what you do.
Resub long enough to buy and enchant full Heirloom outfits for a few classes, then make new characters on a new server and send the gear over. Play those characters only when your account time runs dry.

Went on Nostralius tonight because one of my mate couldn't put down his nostlagia goggle's down. Downloaded their installer, set up and installed the game really quickly.
Go through the boring ass quest in Deathknell. About 15 people in the starting zone. Takes ages to get the skellies and everyone is tagging mobs like their life is depending on it.
Scarlet crusaders on the right side are getting spawn camped, takes 20 minutes to get 12 bracers and 5 more minutes to get the named npc.
After an hour and half I'm lvl 6 and he joins me from durotar through the zeppelin to bril.
We grab all the quests, head left to do the pumpkins and scarlet insignia.
It takes ages because we have to do it two times cuz quest items arent shared. XP is shared with a bonus of 10%. Grab Gordo's quest. Can only find one Gloom Weed. About 20 people in brill. We turn our shit in, now time to kill some more scarlet crusader though and gather fucking duskbat pelt and dog's blood. Drop rate is abysmal. "You done yet ?" he says while my counter shows 2/8. Grind some more shit, turn in. Grab level 8 talents.
Go north kill some gnolls, takes forever to get the ichors to drop, get the named Mangled Eye quite quickly. See a Doomguard ?? in the distance, my mate gets aggro'd from a 100 yard and get os'd. Laugh my dick off, people whining on the /1 about trolllocks PK'ing lowbies.
Turn in quest, go northwest to do the Agamand shit. Grind some more shitty bones and skulls, run back to brill, run back there. Never actually find the three named npcs. Ding 10 while grinding mobs, run back to brill. Get class quest, run to undercity, grab a wand for cheap on the AH. UC is lagging like fuck, 100 people spread around the bank. Run around, turn quest, get new spells. Heartback to brill, back to the agamand farm cuz warrior's quest. Still can't find 3 named ghost niggas. Drop it, back to brill. Turn in, go right, grind some other farm with ghost and zombies. Ding 11. /played 6h30 minutes. Logout.

My retail WoW sub expired, so I tried out Nostalrius and had a pretty similar experience. But its easier when you group up with randoms for some quests (I ended up doing that and hitting 15 or so); people are usually very sociable.

I think the most important thing about TBC and Wrath dungeons is that, no matter how geared you were, the game provided you with reasons to do the dungeons (badges, dailies etc.)

All these killed vital social cohesion for servers. Instead of taking the steps to actually go out into the game world and communicate with players directly to achieve a goal, or travelling to an area players congregated; you instead use a UI element to play instantly with other players you will never meet again, who have no stake in playing nice with you or even making friends with you. It deprives you of opportunities to chat with them and make friends / contacts.
It almost removes the "multiplayer" from the MMORPG idea, and replaces it with a world populated by strangers too absorbed in their own single experiences. This leads to a stagnant MMO community.

My fondest memory was throwing paper zeppelins back and forth with my friends one late night on the shores of a beach in Azeroth. I can't even recall why we were in the area. It was just some spontaneous bit of fun. We had such a great time tossing those silly things around as we laughed over voice chat. The image of my long-gone guild mates playing below that big yellow moon as we jumped through the waves is one of the happiest I can recall.

Can anyone help me remember the name of the area? There were elf ruins nearby and there was a water dungeon with Twilight's Hammer cultists in it. This was before Cata so they weren't a big deal yet. I remember that there was a lot of swimming involved in the dungeon, including areas where you would walk on ruins to cross the underground lake. I think one of the bosses was a giant turtle and I remember satyrs.

The fastest levelling on live right now beyond that is spamming detention block in BRD over and over at lvl 55 or so, just use the drill to go to Fineous Darkvire, jump down and kill him -- dungeon complete. You can get to lvl 58 in like 20 minutes and start TBC

I had just started playing in Feb of 05 with a friend. I had a warlock and he had a priest, we couldn't have been more than level 10. He was down in a cave and I started Life Tapping and saying "help quick" and "heal me" in party chat. He ran up through the cave, aggroing a bunch of shit to try to get to me to heal me and just died on the way and I couldn't stop laughing about it. I still bring it up once in a while.
I've subbed on off for years. Planning to resub right before Legion and find another mythic guild. Hopefulle this one doesn't shit the bed, I only got half the mythic kills in Warlords before quitting out of frustration. That's my story and pic related was my character.

The leader was a boomkin, literally. In raids and guild events he was boomking hundred percent. We were just shooting shit and stuff, there was Bluekiller, Bluecheese, Xbolt, Emendill, Jutzzi, damn why i cant remember all other names?
Over the course of 3 years we just splitted and regrouped, the main crew always stayed the same, i woul just get a mail from gristokus or boomkin sometime saying "hey we are gathering the old crew" and i would instantly leave my current guild.
Dark Heaven, Invincible, a name with bone, Extinction when we defeated Lich King. Last one was "The Golden Fools".
I remember writing Bluekiller a mail back in 2010. In 2015 December i load up the game for a free-time week and immedieatly went for the mail. It was empty, turned out the mail saves only up to last 30 days. i was dissapointed. I was even without a guild, probably disbanded sometimes late cataclysm. Just joined a random guild for some chat.

Than i come across an undead priest in undercity, just sitting on the bridge, we talk for good amount about old times. Than i stand up and show him my guild tabard, proud and happy.
He says me, the tabard only shows your current guild. I accidently log out trying to quit the guild. Come back, quit the guild, and my tabard actually goes back to plain white.
And the last remaining bit of Golden Fools died with that tabard.

I played RIFT for a couple months. It was really fucking fun. The zone-wide invasion events were the coolest things I've ever experienced in an MMO. Dozens of people of all levels would show up every time one happened.
But I have a friends who STILL plays it and even runs one of the only raiding guilds left. He says the population has dropped super low, no one even cares about the zone events anymore, and the raiding is often buggy or incomplete when released.

SWTOR -- I can tell you about this. I first played it back in 2011 during the December when it launched, I played for the free month and quit.
This last month though (2015), I've been playing it. The new Star Wars movie had me aching for some more Star Wars shit, and I thought "why not try out SWTOR again?" So I did.
It's still the same game -- a singe player story driven MMO; it's still the same shitty unoptimized engine that lags and chokes when you do so much as open a menu; it's still boring as fuck. I played it for a month, levelled an Imperial Agent to level cap, and quit. Not once did I ever have any social interaction with anyone, not once did I have any need to, not once did I "fall in" with a group of people who became my friends. Not once did anyone ask me about joining their guild... it's the worst kind of MMO, one that's not even an MMO while pretending to be one, and that runs like a spastic through a magnet factory and is ultimately very very dead inside. Avoid.

there are some top tier AQ-40 and Naxx runs by a (IIRC) a gnome mage...can't remember the guild, but think it was french. You can probably google [raid name] either POV or movie. For BC raids, you can probably find what you want looking up nihilum or similar. Kungen has a stellar POV raid of a ZA bear run that blew my mind when it was current--just his ability to tank/grab threat/control adds effortlessly.
There used to be websites for these things, but I think last time I looked this up out of late-night curiosity a lot of the host sites had closed for the raid videos. Your best bet is someone uploaded them to youtube most likely.

It was really good when it came up. There was this 10-20 level zone and it's chat was just like vanilla barren chat. You would come across LOTS of people in zones, lore was just developing and it was good, not a single-player mmo like swtor, or a go do this x15 like your average f2p. It was fun to read quests, and the server-events was just fun.
Also classes and talents were really diverse and pvp was fun.
I droped the game after 4 months for money issues and never went back. My bet is the train went missed, you missed too much lore to be excited about it, and zones should be empty by now. But give it a try, maybe i am wrong.

Thug Rangers was my first guild. My boss was playing at work and he got me started on the WoW train very soon after BC was released. He founded a guild that most of the people in our office joined. The only requirement was that you has to be from [company name] to join and that you had to name yourself using a Thug[color] convention.
He was Thugred, I was Thugjade, and we soon recruited Thugblue, Thugmauve, Thugyellow, and many others to the cause. When we were grouping, he'd yell in chat "THUG RANGERS ASSEMBLE!" and we'd start spamming "I'll form the head!" "I'll form the arms!" etc. It was silly and had no purpose other than to let off steam and goof around.
It's amazing how having that guild brought our workplace together. People who never would have talked to each other in different departments were swapping Warcraft stories and even though we all had our separate interests and lives outside of work we were all on the same page when it came to this game. People became friends with each other. It was a truly great environment to be in.

Rift is really, really solid, but that's about it.
What I mean by that is that it doesn't really do anything wrong. It's got a cool class system, interesting lore, lots of content/stuff to do at all times, etc etc. It's got everything a good MMO should have. But at the end of the day, it just doesn't do anything so amazing that I could call it a great MMO. Everything is good, but still more or less standard. And a lot of stuff that did go above and beyond doesn't really matter anymore due to the population of the game having decreased so much. Like some anon's said, the train has been missed.
It's still a good game and I can definitely see it being fun if you get the right group. I jump on every few months and play for a while. I've more or less been leveling the same alt for a year now just by how sporadically I play, and it's been pretty fun. I actually read the quests descriptions in a lot of cases because the world is decently interesting; there's even special story quests scattered around that connect across a ton of zones that link in with the overall story of the game.
Long story short: try it out, preferably with friends, and you may be pleasantly surprised, but probably not overwhelmingly surprised.

The Monk.
PvP is a bit of a joke since as Windwalker we rely heavily on Fists of Fury for our biggest/best source of damage.
In terms of PvE, Monks were very strong early WoD tiers, but classes caught up with us in all specs and are overall doing more damage than us, healing than us, or tanking better than us.
Brewmasters have the lowest DPS of all the tank specs. A decent Paladin or Druid tank will destroy a Brewmaster.
Mistweaver is honestly the only way we can stay on the board with retardedly potent heals. Fistweaving just makes it better. Too bad we'll see it vanish come Legion however.
Windwalker was very powerful pre-Heroic BRF, but other DPS classes caught up and now we're mid-low tier, especially in Mythic HFC. However we do pull much better numbers in cleave fights.
Monks are a great class, but have a higher skill ceiling for any spec compared to a Fury Warrior or a Disc. Priest.
