I'm replaying GTA III on my PS4 right now and I can't believe how much fun it is compared to the newest entries, GTA IV and V.
It's missions are perfectly designed, Liberty City feels like a true city instead of a videogame-y one, the radio stations are great (despite not having that many songs), the factions and characters are fantastic.
I could go on and on... Why is III so much better than IV and V, /v/?

Remember when GTA III came out for PC and it caused a shitstorm because the specs were so high at the time that tons of people were having trouble playing it properly.

Not sure. They made it 1080p, but kept the same graphics of the PS2 version. For instance, the PS3 version of GTA San Andreas has higher texture resolution than the PS4 one, since the PS4 is based on the original while the PS3 one is based on the PC / iPad re-releases.

Yeah, Metal Gear Solid 1. It's a great game, but after a certain point that I cannot recall right now, it just starts to fall apart. With every boss except Raven being shit on the second disc, with the horrible, horrible backtracking during the card section, the goddamn awful Liquid fight, and that abysmal turret section at the end, the game just doesn't end nearly as strongly as it started.

I think the city has a pretty poor layout, and not enough blocks. Even if they had just thrown in some meaningless filler houses, it would be better than just going under that bridge and being in Compton, when you can still see downtown just past the highway. By the layout I mean that it's really easy driving through the entire city on like one street, which makes it feel smaller than it should. The street level detail is there though

They got 2srs4me on the PS3 era. I mean, BoGT and V do have alot of humor, but it's alot more realistic humor, not the cartoony wacky stuff from III and VC. SA was sort of in between.

The thing about GTA III that the sequels understandably forgot was how simple it was. You had up to 3 story missions at a time - everything else you had to find in the world. No one's buzzing you on your phone to bowl, there's no stock market meta to worry about, no weapon/car upgrades, no overabundance of side missions, no cosmetics (unless you really want to count skins in the PC version), no complicated cover/aiming system, no RPG elements, no turf wars - the list goes on.
It was as complicated as it needed to be.
As much as we like to nostalgiafag, Vice City began the tradition of cramming a GTA game with excessive features, which itself isn't a bad thing for a GTA sequel to do.

Watching static animations for people getting shot just doesn't feel right, combined with the guns sounding like cap guns and the hitboxes being pretty lackluster.
Man San Andreas was just perfect. The missions were great, story was exciting, the customization was just enough to satisfy that need in open world and man the graphics were not great at all but the all the stuff you could actually do. I tried playing vice city agian a few months for the nostalgia but it had definitely aged. Everything was lacking in one way or another. I play SA, discounting graphics , its what every sandbox style game should be. IV was disappointing but i could see why someone would take that over San Andreas. Some people don't like the aesthetic and want a more serious type of game but it wasn't me. Haven't played V for more than a couple hours but that still has a lot of the issues i had with Iv so i didn't really try to get into it. I'm happy with the experience because i know i always got that undeniable classic that is SA.
