I like the term rougelite more. Rougelike would means that it's like Rouge but most games are not like that.
>>
>>324140490
>It is too late, the definition of a rogue-like has already changed.
It hasn't, really. You cause a lot of confusion using it like this. We have perfectly appropriate words to indicate the distinction, like Rogue-lite, Roguelike-like, or Action-roguelike as suggested by >>324140301.

The distinction between the literal and non-literal meanings of "literally" literally never matters though.
>>

Binding of Isaac is about powerlevelling to Godmode in 30 minutes and gradually unlocking more varieties of the same game.

Nuclear Throne is an arcade game about surviving for as long as you possibly can under waves/arenas full of enemies whose lethality curve is a cliff face, and character progression is incredibly limited.

While the presentation is roughly the same, the appeal is fundamentally different.

I never knew people could be this anal about the definition of the word "rogue-like".

I like NetHack and DC:SS a lot too (even if I'm absolutely shit at them), but holy shit people, the fact that games exist that put a different spin on elements from those kinds of games isn't the end of the world.

>>324143706
I'm not sure. It depends on if you consider everything that isn't a figure of speech to be literal. Even if it isn't the opposite, it is idiotic to have one of the definitions of X word be not X.
>>
>>324143947
"Putting a different spin on elements of the genre" is not the same as "being an entirely different game and using a few elements of the genre". Why isn't Binding of Isaac a Zeldalike? It's actually a lot more similar to it.
>>
>>324143437
>we're talking about bread
>>
>>324144173
Except most rogue-like/lite/whatever word you fucking want to use for that kind of games these days can't really be called a genre. It's more of a modifier you put on a game of a different genre. Spelunky is a platformer game with rogue-like elements, Crypt of the Necrodancer is a rhythm game with rogue-like elements, Dwarf Fortress is a strategy/management game with rogue-like elements etc. Only the classic games like NetHack, Dungeon Crawl: Stone Soup, and the original Rogue can only really be considered a genre anymore.

I guess I can appreciate that people want to separate the more classic rogue-like games (like the aforementioned DC:SS) from the more modern ones, but could you at least have chosen two terms that aren't exactly one fucking letter apart?
>>
>>324143990
Not yet, but don't pretend that we are not heading down that path. When the Oxford English Dictionary adds words like bling, dope, phat, and twerk, I'd say that language conservationists haven't won.... and I'm not talking about the Oxford Online Dictionary that adds all the new hip words, I'm talking about the grumpy old man dictionary.
>>
>>324144850
I guess "traditional Roguelikes" have always been Roguelike RPGs, anyway.

The game was designed for ascii, and as far as ascii graphics go, DF is pretty advanced. ascii is very easy to read once acquainted with, and really isn't any harder to learn than tiles.
>>
>>324158180
It wasn't really designed for anything, Toady just went with ascii because that's the only/easiest/fastest way to display what he wants the game to display, he himself said that he doesn't really see ascii as a requirement/design choice beyond that.
Sure, it's easy to read, but not necessary to enjoy the game, and you don't lose any info by running tilesets

Is not that hard.
To be a rogue-like it must contain elements present in rogue originally
For it to be a rogue-like-like it must contain bare elements present in rogue, but only barely, they aren't rogue-likes if the only thing Is procedural levels or permadeath.
Nevertheless to say, no, we can't name rogue-likes "rogue" because there's only one rogue.
And rogue-lites aren't complex enough to be real rogue-likes
