At the start you don't understand the mechanics and there is a lot of different shit out there with a truckload of exceptions so you think the game is shit.
Then you slowly start understanding each hero and their mechanics and you start doing some interesting things and you have fun.
Then you end up just knowing the mechanics (as everyone else in your games) and you are back to the first state of everything being entertaining but boring, with not much to actually learn and mechanics that you could get better at, but that are simply not worth it in terms of enjoyment.
I only play dota when I have nothing else to play nowadays.

To try and get a stable income out of playing dota 2 or LoL is not what a normal, well adjusted person would do. Perhaps if you have spent your entire young adult life on this game and you have no other quality, making that decision would be understandable.
I doubt the legitimacy and prestige of MOBA will ever go as far as some of the fans proclaim.
And it's not due to the stigma of being a "competitive computer game" either - rather it's the inherent quality/performance assessment issue, the perpetual rebalance of the "game".
For example, games like chess, or football or basketball don't have this issue because the rules and elements to the game are fixed on both sides, to win at these games requires genuine skills - skills that are appreciable by every functional person in society, not because "I can farm 500 creeps in 30 minutes" or some strategy is exploitable, or *insert heroes are being OP pls nerf etc.
From the ancient to modern ages people will always applaud the winners of real sports (mental or physical) and I doubt someone who proud themselves of being super skilled in dota will ever be taken seriously.
