The first area you'll go to is the encampment. There's a tent with a pawn selling an item that lets you change the appearance of yourself and your pawn one time. There's also a better one that works infinitely but I'm not sure if it's available right from the start. Read about them on the wiki, but in general everyone wants Utilitarian primary pawns, because they can work together if they're all Utilitarian.
Utilitarian Mages/Sorcs buff more, synchronize spells more.
Utilitarian Ranged characters hang back from the fray and aim better.
Utilitarian Fighters and warriors focus more on disabling enemies, either holding them down, or using grappling moves like Soul Skewer.
In addition to all that, Utilitarian pawns can just call out actions that other pawns will follow through. Like one utilitarian pawn will grab a goblin, and the other is already ready to attack the pinned down monster because they planned that. Meanwhile the idiot nexus pawn is doing nothing.
I'd say shoot for Utilitarian as the Primary, and then Scather or Mitigator as secondary if you want your pawns to focus on the strongest monster, or the weakest small fry respectively.
this is a pretty bad game and I'm just gonna leave it at that. There's obviously nostalgia involved in all the praise. Thank god for refunds.

It's a common misconception, but MK doesn't really have to care much about magick. Cannons are still 40% strength, elemental riposte's biggest damage factor is the incoming hit rather than your own stats, and most of their abilities are magick shield stats + personal stats with total disregard for the weapon. Even if you went full sorcerer to 200, your personal stats would be less than 50% of your total magick, and because canons are split damage the lost strength on sorcerer means they end up being the same output anyway.
Split damage like the cannon tends to do much worse on BBI where they actually gave enemies defenses, and splitting your output just makes it harder to punch through either threshold. All this combined with the final BBI MK mace being pure strength, means the strongest MK you can make is actually pure strength using abyssal anguish.

The biggest difference is you take double damage and abilities drain stamina twice as fast. On the flipside, you get double exp and absurd amounts of gold. Enemies don't get more health, and pawns aren't affected.
This means the early game can be a lot harder due to the increased damage, but leveling twice as fast means you reach the point where that doesn't matter quickly and just kill enemies faster.
Personally, I don't think the mode is very balanced and ultimately doesn't introduce much more difficulty. It's more like a fun thing to do once to get two unique armor pieces you probably won't bother to use.

Is mage fun to play in this game? I know that magic and magic effects are pretty awesome in this game, but is it actually fun to play as one, or should I just go with warrior?

it just strait up saves you the gold and the materials, you can also skip all of it and dragon forge your stuff but its a really low percent if your gear isnt upgraded. Three star equipment has a better chance of getting dragon forged so its pretty worth while to do it

depends on what you find fun - if you enjoy the challenge of positioning yourself at the back of the pack, trying to avoid being targeted while standing still for 10 seconds to charge up your super awesome spells, it can be fun
if you don't like the idea of having to constantly position yourself "away" from the action and want to be in the thick of things, then you'll hate it

I took all the quests from the billboard by the pawns guild in Gran Soren, all the "kill X monsters" quests, but when I mark them and look at the map it's not marked anywhere?

you can switch vocations at the main inn in gran soren and you're encouraged to change to get passive bonuses, so dabble in everything for a bit

Board quests aren't marked only side quests(given by an npc) and main quests will show you the location on the map.
I recommend taking all board quest, (except escorte) as you'll complete 90% of them while just traveling to main quest locations.
