While it does seem unnatural, people force audible laughter frequently. If someone isn't looking at you and they say something you find funny it's socially normal to laugh audibly when maybe it only made you grin. It communicates to the person that you found it funny.
It is NO DIFFERENT than typing "lol" etc. They serve the same function. It gives the person a way to perceive your appreciation when they otherwise couldn't.
