Just do whatever you feel like, you can switch voactions once you get to Gran Soren at any time.
Your first 10 levels influence your stats more than the next, so your first class is somewhat important but ultimately not. Everyone evens out by 200.
That being said, if you want to do magic archer, do mage first. It'll buff your damage whereas going strider first will make your magic arrows do jack shit.

Remember NOT to start on hard, because it's hard as balls early (and fun), but subsequently breaks the entire game post level 20-30. You get showered in XP, DP and gold. The game isn't one of the hardest to begin with, but hard mode actually makes it easy mode after a few hours. Normal has better progression.

Played on PS3 and have around 200-300 hours (lots of UR online kills and build min-maxing and twinking out peoples pawns)
I can absolutely confirm that while hard mode is brutal early game, you get double exp and skill points, also mobs drop randomly 1k-10k bags of gold like candy.
In the regular game, a rush to gran soren will earn you probably less than 10k, a rush to gran soren on hard will net you 200-300k rng dependant.
Honestly, if you hold out on doing the escort to gran soren and do all the sidequests, do some exploration and kill stuff, you can end up gearing up your main and pawn in the best gear for every chapter with change for 40 potent greenwarish and large mushrooms, making the double damage moot (since you can heal it easily and the extra def from good gear will counter it) and the double stamina cost doesnt mean shit when you can afford to eat mushrooms 2-3 at a time just because you want to spam abilities..
Normal difficulty has a similar progression however, it gets easy within a few hours.. Hard just has to endure a little longer, and then has unlimited resources soon after that.
(I will play on Hard anyway because I think it is way more fun, and the difficulty falls off around the time everyone thinks you are the badass hero of the world anyway, sinking gold into gear and materials so I don't have to loot as often is nice too)
