So I was reading up about Dragon's
Dogma a bit and guess what? In this
medieval fantasy game, there are giant spider enemies. They are apparently "only" dog-sized though. We've fallen so
far as a society that dog-sized spiders
roaming the land is an acceptable
situation.
Giant spiders are some of the worst
enemies in gaming for several reasons.
For one, they are wildly cliche. Giant spiders, are almost always arbitrarily shoved
into the game. They always live in some
cave filled with webbing. HOW ORIGINAL.
Even in Dark Souls II, which has an entire
section dedicated to spider enemies, they
are there for basically no reason. It seems like developers feel like they
HAVE to put spiders in.
Also, when has fighting giant spiders ever
been fun? Think of one giant spider battle
you enjoyed. They almost always consist
of them spitting some shit at you,
poisoning you, or lunging. And there's a
billion of them. Every giant spider battle
is exactly the same. Zelda kind of mixes it
up since the spiders typically hang from a
web so you gotta hit their underbelly. This
is still a boring enemy. No one looks
forward to fighting these guys. People
never say "Yo, this spider battle's gonna
be intense!" but instead, "Christ, the
fucking spider area is coming up."
Lastly, arachnophobia. The fear of
spiders. This is a very real thing that
many people suffer from. Some people won't play games with giant
spiders. You never see
this with other enemies. Developers know
people don't like them, and yet add them
in anyways. Why? Is it supposed to be
scary? You're making a fantasy game where
you swing around a magic sword. And if
you want to scare the player, putting in a
giant spider seems really cheap and
unimaginative. It just seems like contempt
for the player.
Now I know someone's gonna come in
here and describe an example where a
spider the size of a house contributed to
their overall enjoyment of the game, but replace that enemy with something else.

Well I most definitely have arachnaphobia, but personally find battling giants spiders in games insanely satisfying. If I know they are coming theres a sadistic part of me that looks forward to bashing their creepy faces off

Seems like it is always just the generic spider enemies getting reused which is the problem.
Spiders are quite diverse.
You could get some mileage out of them as enemies but it's always the same.
Also arachnophobes need exposure therapy to jumping spiders.
They're too cute to be scary in any way.
They are tiny, have big eyes and peacock spiders even dance.
Spider Dance is such a great theme though.
