The prospect to me is that they are far cheaper than actual consoles and provide games that are exclusive to only them. And great games at that. Tablets are getting more and more powerful so it's not rare to see PC releases ported over to tablets.
Right now I'm playing FTL, Panzer Corps, Warhammer 40k Armageddon and Dungeon of the Endless on my tablet. Those games are fucking great and not available on handhelds.
Nintendo will last a couple more generations in the market, no doubt, but I believe handhelds will eventually die down.
Maybe a handheld component on home consoles could be the future.
I feel like handheld games are a lot more similar to the B tier releases that we used to get. Since developers aren't really making those games for pc or consoles they moved to handhelds.
