it'll be 100% worth it, some of my favorite parts of TW3 were references to or meeting characters from previous games. You can tell how far CDPR has come. Here are some tips, though:
For Witcher 1, stick to the main quests, side quests don't do anything except for a side quest where you craft or recover some Raven armor which you can start with in TW2 but it quickly becomes shit after you leave the tutorial level.
For Witcher 2, make a save game right before the quest where you choose to go Iorveth or Roche. Play both paths. Save your game after the credits (the game will create a post-credits save which you can transfer over to Witcher 3) pick the one you want. The only decision that truly matters here is the one regarding Letho. Choose wisely.

if youre angry that the shield isn't burnt away, you realize you need to hold dry wood to a flame for a while before it starts burning in any capacity, right? igni is just a short burst and is in now way capable to setting a cured wooden shield alight in any capacity meaningful enough to make it break down before the burst of flame is over

Quen is the most important thing. Have it up whenever possible.
Dont get Sun and Stats. Its a terribly weak passive that only gets weeker as you level up. It also cheapens Death March into a "just wait 15 minutes for my health to regenerate" run, and is a complete waste of a slot.
Melee can be an absolute beast. Specialize into light attacks and get those melee damage bonuses from mutagens. Also, don't even attempt to spend in crossbow skills.
Take it slow. Spend time using oils and preparing before battles. Do all the sidequests for the much needed exp, and the game gets progressively easier as you get stronger and more confident in melee. And read about monster weaknesses and exploit them heavily.

There are a few good quest lines and interesting lot found among the literal countless side quests, but at the end of the day they were all the same fucking thing over and over and over again until you got sick of running around extremely expansive lands doing the same god damn fucking thing you just did for 60 hours and decide to just do the main quest instead. The sidequests weren't THAT bad, but it was such a slog getting in a boat and going to the points of interest. I wanted to check them all out for the sake of completion, but even I have my limits. It's just the exact same situation every single time with the same rewards with nothing but the boring sea surrounding you and a bunch of sirens that stop you exiting the boat until you shoot them in the head with the crossbow while they try to get on board.
