That's the same boring, pretentious theme that 99% of RPGs share these days, eastern or western. it's gotta be about the cinematic journey, or love, or working together as a team, like this is an ABC special running after school. And there's nothing inherently wrong with the idea, but it's just been overdone and underutilized, not only that but it drains out other potential ideas.
As an example, I'll point you to pic related. Notice how all the western and eastern high profile RPGs are down in the lower ranks? That's because they're shallow and all about the spectacle, instead of having substance. The best RPG of that given year was a very simple one, that didn't try to push some garbage message, or preach to you, or bore you with cinematics, or some cheesy romance. It actually had FUN gameplay.

As a general note, the less story your RPG has, the higher it ranks. Why? Well, RPGs have always been inherently flawed by relying so much on a heavy story. Xenoblade in particular has 10 hours of cutscenes, what the heck man. And no, there's no amount of gameplay that can justify that. It's inconceivable why someone would do that.
An RPG that can be interesting without a bunch of garbage story is one noteworthy of praise.

Well the issue isn't really western developers but western development (american not european).
So many kids have gone through uni and got 'Game Development Degree's' and have got WAAAAAAAAY to large. There's two major issues with this. Firstly it's harder to change ideas with a larger team. So it's hard to add or change features past the beggining of the development cycle. Secondly western dev teams are sometimes in the hundreds they have to pay these people and thus are forced to make a game that will sell, not one with creative or developed ideas. They bet on games that have large appeal, which are generally games which are easily marketable. These tend to be large games that include a bit of everything but unfortunately nothing worth while after the first 20-30 hours or so.
Until there's a huge collaspe in the AAA western industry, we will still be getting over hyped extremely average games that don't excel at any one area.
