I'm actually not a huge fan of this game. I think I played it until I got that prince guy in my party, and then I quit.
The encounter rate was too high and I didn't think the battle system was all that great. The battles were very repetitive.

Nostalgia is a factor with me, I won't deny that, but it's also a time and place thing. When it came out it had very high production values, but it was also a time when RPG's were trying to be a little more self serious, so it kinda stood out in that regard as a cheery game. It also has a satisfying sense of discovery in my opinion and none of the main characters strike me as hatable. I totally get someone not liking it these days, it has aged and the encounter rate is nuts. The storyline on the whole is also a bit basic, but I think the little moments with the characters are what salvage that.

This is still the only game where I feel like I am exploring the entire world and beyond rather than just a collection of small places. The sense of progression from Vyse, Aika and Fina looking at the sunset on Outlook Island at the beginning of the game, to sailing through familiar areas, then places they haven't been to yet, then places no-one's ever been to yet, then up to fucking space is incredible.
Also, I love the borderline autistic amount of descriptions for random stuff you can examine while exploring on foot and of different messages NPCs have, your ship crew in particular says different things after every single story event.

Flying in Skies of Arcadia always had me a bit uneasy. Like on a regular boat you can at least swim. On an air ship if you fall or there's a problem with the ship you're fucking done.

Your ship does get slightly weaker in defense while in the rift, Battling the monster in there is really a test of your tactic prowess and planning. SHould you heal or focus on attack? Should you evade or should you buff up your defense/Attacks parimeters?

I do not understand this complaint. The encounter rate is fine. A lot of the encounters are avoidable anyway, when you hear that Dreamcast GD-drive start spinning and you can interact with something on the screen and the encounter goes away.

Dreamcast emulation isn't bad. I completed Skies of Arcadia on the DC easily, and was able to play it in 1080p widescreen for the most part. (Pic related) Oh, you've stolen my pic for this post >>323976524. Let me use another.
NullDC is surprisingly easy to emulate, the only downsides are the skies themselves, which you'll traverse a lot but it's not like it's impossible to navigate. NullDC is also a good option if you're finding running Dolphin to be difficult. I get 30fps playing Skies in Dolphin with everything set to native, whereas I can get 60+ fps in Skies on NullDC, at 1080p widescreen.
If you can run Dolphin, go for it, but if not NullDC is always there.

I found it in a charity shop for £10 back in 2012. Such a great find. Didn't even know I had a masterpiece in my hands until I finished it a year later. I found Legends for £22 months later.
I wasn't even meant to go into that charity shop. My mother told me that Zone of the Enders was in there for £2, and I should get it. I followed her advice, and saw Skies. Had to buy it when I saw it was for the Dreamcast.

From a gameplay perspective he's probably the best 4th in my opinion. Justice Shield is ridiculously good. As a character I think Drachma (and Gilder to a degree) is more interesting but I still like Enrique.

Skies of Arcadia and Wind Waker are two very good examples of how to do emotions/expressions even without requiring massive poly counts.
What I find incredible, and honestly don't know if i've seen it replicated to this day, is they made the spunky tomboy redhead hothead female, and didn't make her a bitch in any way or overtly obnoxious. She was prone to letting her emotions take over, but never to an annoying degree. That was masterfully done, and I still don't necessarily know how they knew how to approach that.

Skies of Arcadia is the best game I've ever played. It's not even a nostalgia opinion, because I first played it only like 3 years ago and have replayed it every year.
The first time I played it I got fucking rekt constantly.Every single ground boss was hard as shit. The first lion boss, the robot boss in that island, the bile monster in the sewer, the executioner, the turtle, those floating heads in that island where Vyse and the others are separated, they ALL took like 20 tries to beat. I got my shit pushed in so hard by this game.
Gilder was the best companion, Drachma was cool too. Too bad the faggy prince was the "best" one because of his shield move.

The only difficult parts of the game for me was the first ship battle, because I was low on healing supplies and would always die and had to win the fight out of luck. The second was the last ship battle. I don't know why but it was just fucking difficult. Surprisingly the Final boss fight was easy.

In fandoms I see a lot of OT3 things like that, but I honestly feel like, with how they're portrayed in the game, how they all interact with each other that really Vyse, Aika and Fina are the only trio that could work as a polyamory group. Bought it at GameStop back in 2006 I think, $16 used. I'd look for the receipt but I put all my old stuff in the basement and don't feel my rummaging.
However, I didn't actually get around to beating it until like 2010 or 2011, the first time I played it I was disgusted by the slow battle speed and muddled audio quality, I tried again later on when I was clearing out my GC collection and I played it right after Paper Mario TTYD , which is another game I held off on for dumb reasons. But if you want more of an adventure. Legends is your best quality despite the whole encounter rate being bad. There is more content in it. New Hunts, New Weapons new Explorations.

There was that last burning moment of glory for Sega that still lasted a little bit even after the Dreamcast bit it. JRSF and Monkey Ball are among the greats and yes, should be on steam. I was the same way when I was in high school, I passed up on so many great games of that era because I was only interested in Halo and the like, pretty much if it wasn't a shooter I didn't even look. Dropped out of school and went into a depression phase for several years, started playing ROMs and ISOs of old vidya and Skies was one of those games that still affect to this day in a positive way.
