However, that's only because they have poor movesets. The Boom Hammer hits really hard when tricked and so does the Tonitrus. The Tonitrus has the advantage of being a bolt weapon, though, and not many clothing options resist bolt aside from Henryk's set.
I think Stake Driver is really good. 50/25 STR/SKL makes it do a lot of damage and its moveset is fast, especially the tricked dash attack. The tricked R2 is useless in PvP unless the host is retarded, so I don't really use it.

Axe is the best starter and one of the best in the game. Choosing it gives you access to one handed and two handed movesets, with an L2 move and blunt, thrust, slash, everything you need.
The Absolute Best Weapon in Bloodborne is either the Logarius Wheel with flat arcane gems, or the Beasthunter Saif

along with a Rapier, which is pretty nice since piercing damage is helpful in the early game.

Hunters were always immune to from-behind melee kills. You're remembering wrong. They lost health from melee attacks, but could not be one-shotted.
Combat flood were immune too. Also, oddly enough, sentinels were not immune to stealth melee, and could be one-shotted from behind.

Unless the numbers on a weapon are egregiously low (and threaded cane isn't, particularly not when buffed)
this shit means very little. A weapon's moveset is as good as the person who's sensibilities it appeals to. If I'm comfortable with a weapon that you tell me is bad but I get results from switching over to say the saif isn't going to do me any good if it doesn't suit me.
Saif is good though.
