The ships hyperspacing in the trailer intrigue me. I hope they are ancient Hiigarian ships from a recording or something. This game has a huge potential lore wise and we haven't seen an RTS with a good story in almost a fucking decade.

Also I hope the gameplay is holds up, I'm interested in playing it online and I'd hate if it was shallow or broken. I'm very confident that the Single Player will be amazing though.

All that lore meant fuckall because you never actually saw any of the actual races any of this shit was important to. You never see a single living being beyond Karan. The whole thing could be about sentient spaceships or robots. You have little reason to care about any of this shit without actual characters to get attached to.
>>
>>323934131

Seeing Karen doesn't imply that the rest of the race aren't living being? The Bentusi are being attached to their ships and they didn't need a face to be a character, hell their mission in Cataclysm is one of the best RTS missions ever made to date just because of how strong the voice acting is.
>>
>>323932887
you know, aside from the fact that HWs enemies could come from any direction they did less meaningful things with 3 dimensions than many other RTSs since then.
It could easily have been a locked plain like ST:armada and not much of the gameĀ“s complexity would have been lost, save of course its eternal charme.

So, your complaining seems kind of rose tinted.

not him but did you get upset when the New Republic planet got blown up in the new Star Wars? Kharak burning has that same effect. You don't care. You have no emotional investment. None of the characters even react, Karan is a robot and the other faggot just stays monotone. There is no emotional investment at all.
>>
>>323938853

The characters are being professional but they aren't soulless. You can see this in small moments like "the subject did not survive interrogation" or how they don't decide to hide or evade but instead order you to hunt down and kill the fleet that destroyed your Homeworld. I'd argue that this was done better in the original HW1 voice acting though.

You can see much less professional characters in Cataclysm since those aren't in charge of their entire population and weren't selected from a list of millions.
>>
>>323938853
>there is no emotional investment

But that's fucking wrong retard.

>the music
>the characters reacting
>feeling powerless

Just admit that you are a cynical prick who can't cry anymore because he spent too much time being angry on the internet.
>>
>>323939653
>the characters reacting

But nobody reacted, as I just said. Karan's voice wavers for a bit but that's it and the other faggot just keeps talking like he always does.
There are no other characters who's perspective we're given. Everyone in Homeworld could've been fucking robots and it would've made literally no difference.
>>
>>323939863

I don't see what you are trying to prove here. How does any of this implies the game has no lore at all? Just because the few characters don't react strongly to what happens means that players shouldn't?

You know why they made it like that? So you are not told what to feel, the experience tells you directly what to feel. It is very similar to games that have silent protagonists. Of course, the subtlety will go over your head if you are used to modern games that mirrors movies.
>>
>>323939863
Still wrong retard. Just because they say one or two lines of dialog rather than go on a long soliloquy or monolog, doesn't mean they don't react. So what did you want 4 to 5 minutes of a speech, or a short minute of really strong emotional dialog paired with the great soundtrack.

I still don't understand why you'd make a Homeworld game that's not set in space with spaceships.
>>
>>323940861

You'd understand why if you learned about the story of this game and how it became Homeworld. At the end of the day it is a pretty neat opportunity to tell the backstory that the first game had.

Thats nice and all but the original game had a pretty cool book with fleshed out backstory(you can find it as pdf somewhere), not to mention cataclysm, besides being a side story has a pretty good take on using elements off the universe to a higher degree.
>>
>>323942802
>Thats nice and all but the original game had a pretty cool book with fleshed out backstory
Nothing i hate fucking more than having such a incompetent fucking lazy shitty devs that they have to explain they plot through external means rather than through the game itself. Like that fucking crysis 2 comic to explain what the fuck did happen between first and second game. Or online storytelling of Destiny, a fps mmo with less ex positional elements that first entries into the genre.

I mean can you imagine, you go to a cinema, they tell you to come half an hour earlier and borrow you this crappy book written by some washed up writer thats supposed to help you understand the movie you are about to watch?
I cant. But hey, its video games, and those are for children, so who gives a shit, right?

But regardless, the remaster was a shitty lazy upscale that was so broken i had o restart half the mission at lest 3 times.
Gearbox sure as hell didnt do fuck to build on or fix the narrative elements of the game, and seeing how the franchise is handed i doubt this gamer will be much more of an improvement in that regard.
Not that it was a great story to begin with.

Now, can you point me where this info about this war was pre-retcon?
>>
>>323944757

Omission of information of an incomplete manual that is just there to give you an idea of what happened in the past is not a retcon.

A retcon is a contradiction, when something in the sequels/prequels directly go against something previously established by another work. See the case of the Hyperspace Cores in HW2 and how that directly contradicted information in the original manual that the Khar Toba drive was reverse engineered. There is nothing to contradict now because the detailed story of the discovery of the Khar Toba isn't fucking told in the manual.

Or the game can't convey it's emotions because it has no means to.
If you expect to have to imagine everything in order to feel, good luck.
The game is poorly designed in order to tell what is really going on and what is important.
Storytelling was never a big point in Homeworld.
I don't expect it to improve in Kharak, but maybe the gameplay will save it.

It's like saying Half life 1 makes you anyhow attracted to your character.

Too bad HW is a strategy game and therefore is not made to be storytelling if not heavily focused on it.

Not everything has to be a Shakespearean epic covered in purple prose with characters going into long-winded monologues about their plight.

They committed a mild Retcon be declaring with Deserts of Kharak, that the planet Kharak was dieing due to desertification, and in it's worst hours, a war of I'm assuming extinction was ensuing over the limited remaining viable land mass.

As someone who ranks HW2 as their favorite game of all time, why the fuck did they make the higaarans human in this one?

I mean, they were effectively human in the last one based on what you saw of karan s'jet, but why did they have to explicitly call them humans in this one?

It makes me much less interested in the lore now.
>>
>>323956252
If that's what you're talking about, then I agree. Deserts of Kharak sounds a bit generic, it's fine, but Shipbreakers just sounds badass.
>>
>>323956298
They're not humans. They're Kushan.
>>
>>323955690
>>323955943

For some reason those moron devs were playing the game on a laptop.

I agree, all the gameplay looks like low fidelity shit so far.

Why the fuck would the devs put out low FPS low-res trash when we have absolutely no other gameplay to watch?

All I see in youtube comments is people complaining about how bad the game looks and how low FPS it is. Why would the devs shoot themselves in the foot like that?
>>
>>323933165
Did you even play the games?

Expectations are VERY low.
>>
>>323956771

Look in the marketing stuff for the new game, they explicitly call them humans.
>>
>>323956771
>>323956298

When I google 'deserts of kharak humans' this is one of the first results so I hope you can forgive me for linking to leddit

https://www.reddit.com/r/homeworld/comments/402btu/deserts_of_kharak_portraying_the_kushan_as_humans/

>One of the writers confirmed they were humans a long time ago. I'll see if I can find source.

>Don't forget the HW2 poster with the 3 figures across the top. They are pretty clearly human. (The one with the "upside down" destroyer)

>>
>>323956828
Oh, it was on a laptop? I thought the game was just horribly optimized, official videos not having perfect performance is unforgiveable.
>>
>>323957197

I think at the end of the IGN video that IGN guy said 'I know you guys are on a laptop so that's why this is running badly.'

Still though, releasing any gameplay that looks like shit is a guaranteed turnoff.
>>
>>323951229

>desert-only RTS

>fucking arabic music 48 seconds in

>choppy as hell

I really, really want to like this, but this shit sounds like a dumb idea.

"Hey guys let's make a space game ground only and only have a desert setting, shit will be cash I swear".

Not convinced.
>>
>>323956828

>For some reason those moron devs were playing the game on a laptop.

Because most steam users use laptops, the most popular card in Steam HWsurvey is Intel Graphics HD 4000.
>>
>>323956298
>>323956298

The Hiigarans were always human ya stupid bastard.

They show Karen being Entombed in the Motherships AI Core at the beginning of the game, held aloft with some Anti-G support ring and cables galore.

They show the Vagyr War-Emperor or whatever, being entombed in his by being floated in an amniotic tube in the 2nd one.

see

>>323957183

That's why I said 'they basically were human anyways' but it was never explicitly stated.

Now it just seems like a boring as fuck retcon to grab all the plebs who get turned off when the game isn't explicitly about humans.

Nothing can take us far enough emotion
Far enough together
As the light shines so bright
Bright enough to let us in

Nothing can bridge our souls' devotion
Fast enough together
As the power proves you right
Right enough to let you begin
>>
>>323957517

It just makes it feel so incredibly uninspired.
>>
Y'all should just re-read the HW1 manual before getting upset about imaginary retcons. I haven't found anything about DoK thus far that outright contradicts anything in the lore.

>>
>>323956181
The planet dying isn't a retcon
>>
>>323957427

Yeah but 99% of people are retards who do retarded things.

These are game developers who are supposed to know how to make / market / show off a game and not do retarded things related to videogames. Of course we know that isn't true however, since by my definition 99% of game devs are retards too
>>
>>323957672

The soundtrack to HW2 was GOAT with arabic themes.
>>
>>323957672
I reiterate my point.

>Arabic music is a problem
>In a game that's always had Arabic music

Is it uninspired simply because it's on a desert? This has always been the case with Homeworld, it was always influenced by Eastern culture, why is it so wrong now?
>>
>>323956181
>mild Retcon
Its literally mentioned in the HW1 manual. The desertification of Kharak that is.

>>323956298
I've always seen it sort of the same way its done in Traveller. There are humans in Traveller, but they are separtated into different races (mainly from developing in separate parts of the galaxy) You have the Vilani (Humans that lived on a poisoned world), the Solomni (earth Humans), and Zhodani (psychic Humans).

For instance, we see Makaan in HW2 and he looks pretty human as well as Karen who also looks pretty human as well. I think the only race we havent seen are the Taidaan.

These cutscenes look weird, I cant tell if its just tweening concept drawings like they did with HW 1 and 2 or if they're 3-D animations with some oil filter.
>>
>>323957743
>>323957743

Yeah, I know. I probably should've specified.

I couldn't remember if it was dieing due to desertification, or them building the ship and leaving was due to the planet reaching it's capacity with the size of the civilization they had rebuilt on it.

Why would they run a promo on a laptop? I'm sure someone at IGN or BBI has a rig that is laying around unused.
>>
>>323958150
It was desertification, they lost a city because the gaalsien blew up the protection walls (mind you, this was centuries before the discovery)

>FPS is shit

My hype for this game could not have died any faster.

The game was in development hell for years.

First it was an unrelated f2p browser game, then it was a full fledged release, then it was a full-fledge release with the home-world IP tacked on.

This game will have more mutant appendages than an irradiated spider.
>>
>>323957672
Okay bub. HW has always had a Asian/Middle Eastern vibe with it. Some of the names they use are litterally ripped from the bible and other historical sources (Kushan for example)

the homeworld manual has been on a table by my bed since i got the game a hundred fucking years ago, through four moves and three states

I will not buy Homeworld: Deserts of Kharak for my own reasons.

ill give you a hint: gearbox
