I don't really like the minigames at all. Spyro 1 had the perfect balance, i.e. no minigames. I felt like the level design took a massive nosedive too in Spyro 2, which improved a bit again in Spyro 3

- The game features multiple playable characters, but individually each one is more limited than Spyro, which makes their levels less interesting. Some of them have awkward controls and the console FPS segments are out of place in a collectathon platformer.
- There's too much emphasis on minigames. I admit that it's fundamentally a question of preference but the minigames aren't necessarily any fun. Either Insomniac gave up too early in their attempts to expand Spyro's core design, or they made an unnecessary game that no longer has focused design.

- Backtracking. It stretches the game by making the player visit levels (or hubs) more than once, but there's nothing about the level as a whole that's different on the second go, you're just rushing through to access a part that was arbitrarily denied.
- Another thing that depends on preference, but Spyro 3's world doesn't engage me like 1's did. 1 had a cohesive aesthetic, while 3 is a collection of wildly different environments and NPCs. I don't really know how to express it properly, there's no 'sense' of geography. You're jumping from cartoon stereotype to another without an aesthetical link being established that creates the sense of exploring something larger than an individual level.

It's not really a bad game.
It's just the worst out of the trilogy.

Though the animal buddy sections, excessive minigames and all the levels apparently being the inspiration from which Skyrim dungeons would draw inspiration in the future certainly did put a damper on things.

Even if a team of seven is a hundred times better than a team of a thousand individually (which it isn't), the team of a thousand is still going to give you a million manhours first.

The same applies more for one guy vs a team of twenty five or whatever, partially because one guy won't have the specializations (anyone got the article on S1 at direction?) a team can bring to bare.

Taking a leap here, I think we don't see that do much anymore because current industry doesn't support the existence of those small (but >3 people) teams very well.

Just put this on for my son to play. He's only one but he knows what hes doing somewhat. I hope he enjoys these games like I did when I was 4-5.

Autumn Plains was the best level solely because of its comfort level and how much you can explore.

Cliff Town blew my mind as a kid when I found out you could fly across what I thought was an impassable river and find a whole other half of a level, it felt like an open world as laughable as that seems.

I will defend that stage. Even though there's some stupid bullshit if you lose a charge halfway and it takes awhile to get back and try again, it's such a fun and huge stage.

Although it's one of the stages where I realized how hover in the later games is stupidly useful.

There's very few cases where a game managed to make me drop everything I was doing and just had me relax and appreciate the scenery. This was one of them.

They just put Spyro's name in it to sell more. If they didn't include him, Spyro would still be dead and the game would have been made anyway.

To me it felt like platforming was less of a priority, the levels seemed flat and not as clever as in the first game. I played the game for the first time a few months back, I can't really even remember many levels. But playing them all back to back it felt like the third game had slightly better level design than 2. First game had the best hidden areas though
