>Video games took in $46,177,705 on Kickstarter in 2015, according to new stats released today by the crowdfunding company. That’s significantly more than 2014 but not quite as much as Kickstarter made from games in 2013.
>Close to 25% of that money came solely from Shenmue III and the Castlevania spiritual successor Bloodstained, which raised $6.3 million and $5.5 million, respectively. Kickstarter says there were 421 successful video game projects this year—here’s hoping they’ll all actually deliver.
>Kickstarter creators also raised a ton of money last year on tabletop games, garnering $88,916,039.

Have you ever supported a Kickstarter? These figures are just for Kickstarter and excludes other services and early access, but it sure seems like people still love chasing dreams over eating the shit major devs decide to toss out.
>>
I never have and never will contribute to a kickstarter
>>

Proud to say I've never helped kickstart anything.
It just feels like it'd be like throwing your money into a black hole.
I can't even think of something good that has come out of it. Shovel knight maybe?
>>
>>323912910
wow
you are so cool
>>
In a few year, the title will be "Only 10% of the kickstarter video games were delivered"

I'll be happy just to get the art book really, the game is a bonus.

Include entries in fig and it's at about 50,000,000, hot damn. Why aren't you promising people dream games for a living yet /v/?

Divinity.
Arguably Pillars of Eternity
Shovel knight

The new Shantae game looks decent i'd say.

They'd be getting a 5% cut

It really is a lose/lose for us all. The tiny amount of successful kickstarters prove it can be done right, but its more than obvious that the large majority of indie kids just have no clue what to be doing with their money or their time.

>>

In this case publishers are the lesser evil 100% of the time.
At least they don't expect me to fund the development of a game they're only 10% sure they can get done.
Pre ordering AAA's isn't a gamble in the fact that I know there's a game there, it may or may not be good, but at least it's fucking made.
>>
>>323913550
why is it a lose/lose?
are you backing every project?
I've only ever picked up kickstarter games that looked good, after release, and I've not been wronged yet.
I can't see a downside
>niche shit gets funded
>I get cheap good games I like
>idiots get fucked over and I get to watch and laugh at the anal devastation
>good devs get funded and established, old devs get second chances, bad devs consistently fuck over rabid fans for max entertainment
>>
>>323913862
>I've only ever picked up kickstarter games that looked good, after release

Can't really argue with that at this point.

Thing is, if everyone did that,t hey wouldn't ever exist in the first place. You and I can cheat the system, but SOMEONE has to fund that up front or there's no release at all. I've only funded about 3 at this point, and I've been burned every time - either getting something that fell way short of its goals before release, or something that's barely a tech demo. Its become less of a few bad apples spoiling the bunch than it is a barrel full of bad apples with one or two buried inside. There's basically no way to know who the good devs are.

the only reason this has got so much money is because some artist that make INCREDIBLY HILARIOUS comic like this one is working on it

i have no fucking idea how it could happen other than thinking everyone in america is a retard who has really poor economic skills
>>
>>323914395
Sure, if everyone did the same thing the world would be a worse place and things wouldn't work.
But we're all different, people are lining up around the block to fund these games, and you can tell which games are good by pirating them on release or playing the demo.
I'd probably bite the bullet if will wright or chris sawyer made one
>>
>>323914851

Try children who think being 18 means they can do as they please while still living under someone else's roof and not paying any rent.
That's where this disposable income comes from.
>>
>>323912910
Good on you anon. The creation and development of a product should be financed by those developing. Risk is eliminated if it's not the developer's money on the line.

Kickstarter was a plague developed by 7th gen. Yet another sin.

Yes goy, pay complete strangers or companies pulling on your nostalgia strings MILLIONS of dollars
That has NEVER failed, has it?

There hasn't been a single good Kickstarter game (original at least, but sequels aren't safe either). Even Shovel Knight was just a well done Mega Man rom hack
>>
>>323913798
The biggest problem with publisher model is that eventually it turns into AAA spiral if given an opportunity. Which means that many people who like something more niche can starve for loooong years.
>>
>>323915465
You can normally pay $1, or like $20/30 if you want the product on release
or just buy the game on release for $30
You haven't been giving millions to these projects have you anon?

You should read up on the development of Shovel Knight post-kickstarter. It turned out even all the excess money they raised wasn't enough to pay all the staff and they essentially lived on ramen for the last couple of months developing the game. Even the musician had to do a lot of the tracks pro bono.
