I don't think spanking a child in-and-of itself is abuse, but spanking a child to the point of bruising is excessive and abusive. There's a difference between punishment and losing control to the point where you're inflicting physical injuries. This, I was smacked as a kid on the ass once or twice at a time if I was a little shit, but it was never a 'prop you over one knee and just go at it' kind of deal. My dad would hit and rape my mom and I. There were several times I wound up in the hospital to get stitches or staples or casts to fix what he did when he was drunk. He spent many nights in jail from 911 class I made while hiding under the bed.
Whenever they would take him to jail to cool down (he never spent more than a night because mom wouldn't press charges and denied a lot of what he did) we would leave the state to visit my grandparents. My uncle would teach me how to play whatever new games he had on the PC. It was my literal escape from the nightmare.
When he died I was only 7. My uncle bought me a NES to distract me but I was glad he was dead. I remember smiling when my mom told me.
I still have scars from him.

I used to be like you. I believed psychology could fix everything, and help those with mental illness. Then they went pants on head retarded. They became the Harley Quinn to the LGBT's Joker.
I don't think I'm 100% better, I just have enough foresight to realize how fucked up they're making this whole situation. I'm also not saying spanking is a-ok. I'm just saying that, in moderation, it's a decent deterrent to bad behaviors. Kids these days seem to have no fucking respect. People wonder WHY, and, from my perspective, it happened around the time spanking became 100% considered child abuse.
Yes, some assholes go WAY overboard and, like some anons in the thread say, they've experience extensuive bruising, and, yes, suffered legit child abuse. I agree. Fuck THAT shit. But, in my experience, and because my parents didn't go fucking overboard (and stopped after the first 7 or 8 years of my life.
