Why is the Beat'em up genre dead?
>>
It's not. Just pick up any shovelware movie game and you're set.
>>
>>323864265
It isn't.
Character Action games like DMC, God Of War, and Bayonetta are the natural evolution of the beat em' up genre

This is still the most retarded fucking term I've ever heard. It's called a Hack N' Slash you sperg.

>>
Because they're pretty shallow and repetitive. Even the best beat 'em ups get boring after the third stage or so, unless you're playing with a friend.

A better question is why isn't there beat 'em ups like this?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uI-V0rrlZBo

I'd much prefer a beat 'em up where you chain counters rather than punches and kicks. And yes, I'm aware of that 'freeflow' combat that was popularized by Arkham Asylum, but its hardly challenging and also gets dull pretty quickly.

They're not bad games per se, but they're limited by the hardware constraints of the SNES. That system couldn't pull off a beat-'em-up that had more than three enemies on-screen.

Final Fight 2 was kinda dull IMO, but 3 was alright.

They're boring and repetitive; a vestige of the arcade era, where games were more about jewing as many quarters as they could out of kids than anything else.

Shit like Bayonetta, DMC and God of War have basically taken over that niche. You're not going to be getting another Final Fight anytime soon; just be content with the scraps Capcom throws you in Street Fighter and the Versus series.

I've never liked the genre. Can you even get good at these games? It seems like the skill ceiling is extremely low, and all you can do is out pixel your opponent's punching range, and just memorize all enemy spawns
>>
It sucks just like musou games

Because it evolved into the Character Action genre, Asian Genocide genre and whatever the hell the Yakuza series is.

>>323869068
>>None of those games puts a focus on fighting a horde of enemies

But that's exactly what it is mainly about. Have you ever played any of them games?

>a solid multiplayer element

not all beat em ups had multiplayer components, and even then there are a few character action games that have multiplayer.
>>
>>323870514
Memorizing enemy spawns helps like for 1% of a good beat 'em up. You have to understand the gameplay mechanics and learn the enemy AI if you want to ever git gut.
>>
Trying to 1cc Final Fight right know, it's funny how tightly designed this game is compared to a lot of contemporary action games that have a considerably higher amount of moves but most of the fights are poorly designed
>>
>>323870912
Go for it, it's still one of the top games in the genre.

>>
i thought we all liked the term, "Stylish Action"

character action sounds just stupid like using the term car action to describe a racing game

Spectacle fighter sounds like what you'd use to describe the tenkaichi games.

and stop saying that beat em ups evolved into things. theyre separate from stylich action, musou, whatever because theyre different from them.

It's the first time I'm trying to 1cc an arcade game, it's so satisfying when you begin to understand that most bosses aren't as bullshit as you were expecting them to be. I remember back when I was a kid most people saying that Sodom was impossible to beat without losing lives and shit like that

You know, I was ok with it stylistically. The over the top humor was genuinely pretty funny and it's soundtrack was a great mix of 80s esque songs and remixes of their classic tracks. That being said you're 100% right about it's gameplay. Outside of the coop high five you and your partner had to coordinate for, the gameplay had no depth and just wanted you to over power yourself.

Shame, I would love Double Dragon Advance's depth on a game of that style. Sadly we won't get a Double Dragon as good Advance again.

Advance is the best. It's the original with twice as many levels, good balance, and a lot of good enemies, bosses, and weapons. 2 and Super are good. 2 had a unique control scheme and started expanding the move list and enemy list. Super went back to classic controls and kept the new move list with the addition of a charging special bar. The only thing I don't like about super is it feels a little cheaper than the others in terms of difficulty but that might just be me.

The rest of the series is negligible. If you play only one, play Advance. If you play another after that, load up Super.

the NES DD2 was the first game I ever played, so maybe that's why I'm biased towards it. That sound when you pull off a Hyper Knee and send some goon flying across the screen with it is such a cathartic effect. Beat em ups died mainly because they stagnated

It's really hard to make 2d beat-em-up games that aren't like every single other fucking beat-em-up without adding in features that are very hard to implement like deep combo systems, defense tech, etc. Then it just becomes 1-4 man army fighting game instead of a beat em up.

The best Beat Em Up every made is Guardians btw aka Dejin Makai 2. Such a great weird artstyle and I have never played a beat em up with so many different special attacks with an actually intended and fleshed out juggle combo system.
>>
>>323881042

To be fair Dragons Crown fucking fails as a beat em up if you compare them to 90s arcade ones.

Dragons Crown has no "UMPH" factor to the hits, it makes everything super fucking boring.

I personally think that whole development team is overrated as fuck. They have good art and thats it.

That sounds fucking awesome to be honest.

I feel like the Yakuza series is more of a beat em' up than DMC or Bayo.

God hand as well.

I like you.

But really I enjoyed that game so much it's one of the best beat-em-ups I played. And I played a lot.

Play the Tekken Force gamemode in Tekken 3 and 4 then.

You basically have the same massive moveset as the Tekken games and you can pick any character. Camera is a bitch though.

Yeah I did.

Just wish 2d fighters had a similar mode.

I played Streets of Rage 2 for the first time not long ago. Holy shit that game is good. I have no idea how people were fighting about which is better between that and Final Fight. Streets of Rage 2 is waaay better and this is coming from someone that grew up with FF.

also, here's the most underrated beat em up. It really needs a PC release since no one has played it. The Dishwasher: Vampire Smile.

Phantom Breaker something

I remember playing those old 3D arcade beat em ups with the polygonal graphics and the weapons (rocket launcher sent people flying) and you had cutscene qtes for a chance to skip encounters. I thought those were fun but I was like 13.

You are thinking of the Dynamite Dekka games

Aka Die Hard Arcade for the Sega Saturn and Dynamite Cop for the Sega Dreamcast

Those games are still super fucking fun and probably like my favorite beat em ups ever.

It doesn't work

Have you ever played the barrel mode in SF2? It's fucking dogshit garbage.

The problem lies in switching sides of the screen, since you need the back button to backpedal / block / use as an input for special move.

Regular beat em ups you just turn around and walk backwards and its fine.

Unless you had some button that would lock the side you are facing, but that would be extremely tedious and awkward.

I can imagine how it would work though, Perhaps each little section you fight in would be like a stage in a regular vs fighting game, except you would be fighting more than 1 enemy at a time.

But that still would be super unfair if enemies could jump over you and attack you from both sides. Yeah i dunno it wouldn't work.

I can imagine something similar like Final Fight 2 for NES where you have buttons for each direction, maybe make it like a 6 button layout and make the game more complicated.

I really don't care for the genre outside of Chronicles of Mystara, to me that game had a lot more substance than typical beat 'em ups.
>>
>>323882547

>beat em up

>top down

Post vid with proof of concept or you are damn right im just gonna call it a hotline miami clone.

The only top down game that i played that felt beat-em-upish was a ARPG hack and slash game I played called Beyond Oasis.
>>
>>323882461
Some accomodations would need to be made.
I imagine using a 4 button layout for attacks and block/jump on the last buttons.

What do I know though, I haven't thought too hard about it.

>>
>>323867631
Hack n slash is an rpg term. Diablo is one.
>>
>>323882731
nah I already got it in my head just now.

You are locked in SF2 style direction, the default direction you face is facing to the right of the screen.

If two enemies are on both sides of the screen, the priority facing direction is to the right of the screen.

Button layout:

O O O
p<- bp p->

O O O
k<- bk k->

p = punch

k = kick

b = attack that comes out on both sides, for crowd control

up is jump and down is crouch like normal 2d fighting games.
>>
>>323864265
I have no fucking idea. It's weird how fighting games made a comeback and 2D shoot 'em ups are still supported by indie devs in Japan, but beat 'em ups are just completely dead.
>>
Beat 'em ups aren't dead, but they are niche today which is why you don't see very many.

>planning stages
>expecting me to go through the effort of making a prototype for mechanics that I'll probably want to change 3 minutes from now just to make a video to shill my free game to you
Look top down is far more suitable for a beat em up than the isometric/side view of most beat em ups. If you thought about this shit for 5 seconds you would get it. I could go into some 10 minute long disgusting technical explanation, but just think of it this way. Ever play a Street Fighter game? Now imagine that was top-down and controlled with mouse and keyboard. Also lets just assume the mouse has 6 buttons on it, and somehow special inputs aren't retarded and unpleasant. Obviously my game won't work that way but still.(The camera in my game would work like the one in Erst Kerf though, rather than Hotline Miami) How would the average SF game be changed? The important thing here is that jumping no longer exists, in the case of my game at least, other people could do otherwise when they really shouldn't with this view unless they're doing 3D. Even then it's kind of undesirable. The tradeoff here is that you can now walk in 8(360 with mouse control) directions rather than two. Dashing can also be done in 8 directions as well. This means that although fireballs are slightly harder to avoid(rather than just jumping over them you would either dodge sideways to be safe or dodge diagonally to just barely miss it, then dodge forward to reach the enemy in the shortest time, turn towards him, and let out an attack.), you can now fight multiple opponents and actually survive with spacing and evasion. Obviously you'd have a hard time fighting two human opponents, but it wouldn't be impossible, and I'm not talking about that in the first place. My game will be singleplayer.
Also worth noting that because there can't really be a high low game and I wouldn't dare put jumping in the game is basically nothing but footsies. There's a grab though. Low Tier Fraud would love it.

I fuckin' love it. Just enough combo's to keep the game interesting, and the art style is so fucking glorious. The power-up eating thing between missions is surprisingly fun, and gives good bonuses. In the last update they would ever do to the game, they made an endless tower mode which gives really good items, and gets progressively harder. With the ability to go to level 255, you can get hours of play from it. If you don't like grinding, you can finish the main game much earlier. even before level 99.
>>
>>323886596
Nah. I wish! Good thinking tho anon.
Something OC but heavily influenced by side scrolling beat em ups from the early 90's.

From what I hear it's painfully punny but in a stupid sarcastic clever way.
>>
>>323887604
Forgot to mention, I can still get into online lobbies often enough if I feel like doing co-op with strangers. It's much less popular than it was on release, and can sometimes take a while, but It's still alive.
