I'm playing super metroid for the first time on wii u virtual console.
The default controls are killing me. Should I suck it up, or can I play around with the button customizations? X to shoot and A to jump are killing me, but maybe Y to shoot and B to jump would be a lot more intuitive to me, but I don't know how important dash button is. Maybe dash could be ZR? Also maybe select set to ZL?

It needs to run flawlessly if they're going to charge money for it. If you're using a free emulator made by fans it doesn't matter if the game crashes, has bugs or doesn't run as well as the original. If you're paying for an official product, it should work 100% of the time.
