The katana was primarily a dueling weapon/ornament and not very efficient on the battlefield. Samurai originally specialized in horseback archery, spears came into play as battles became more organized and bigger. There were other weapons used but they were mostly specialized and used by a limited number of soldiers.
Also spears and arrows are significantly cheaper to make, wars are expensive
