Most every fighting game after it borrows some of its mechanics from this masterpiece. Guard Cancels, using more than one meter for supers, push blocking, air string combos, advanced modes (ES). Mechanically one of the most technical, and visually one of a kind with how it used sprites.

So why do you guys hate melee so much? I enjoy it as much as regular fighting games and just think of it as being different. Probably Ultra SFIV in terms of balance, depth, and impact. SFIV in general revived a dead genre, Super nearly perfected it, AE broke it, and Ultra fixed it. The state its in now is pretty damn good.
I would argue no fighting game has come close to the level of depth as Melee though. Whether or not you think its a fighting game is a bit irrelevant to this argument.

SNK and Capcom, for example, had a lot of influence in each other for many year. That close refinement of mechanics (as opposed to wildly different ones) is what makes fighting games so niche and yet so refined (the good ones, of course.)
It also has to do with the fact that the character designs and settings do not pander to the young male demo. Mario? Jigglypuf? Sonic? It is all autistic or baby shit.
