What's your excuse for not learning japanese?

Left is the "localized" (read: butchered) chrono trigger, right is a word-by-word translation
>>
Left is far better for a western audience you stupid hipster faggot
>>
>>323784164
It's the same fucking thing. Like you don't know what Establishment means.
>>
>>323784164
Right side is weird, doesn't sound right. Same reason so much anime dialogue is cringy and dumb, it just doesn't translate well without interpretation.
>>
I don't do business with any Japanese people, therefore there's no practical reason for me to learn their language.

I don't have anyone to talk with and learn from, so I don't really feel like trying.
>>
>>323784862
I complemented my english just by listening to tv series, videogames and music (for 15+ years) and the first time I was in a environment with people only speaking in english I was talking almost fluently only after two weeks
>>
>>323784164
it's just simpler, was it a character limit thing?

If I cared to learn Japanese I'd do it to read Soseki or Kawabata, not playing fucking Chrono Trigger.
But please keep telling me about how cultured weeaboos are.

we get it, actual polite language is too complicated for you, burgerbrain. that doesn't make it "wooden".

The left is actually polite though. Your hardon for Japshit doesn't concern me.

I'm following this myself. I'm a few months in and it's going fairly well. I added some modifications and additional resources. Memrise is a pretty good phone app for learning and rehearsing new words, just be sure to choose a Japanese course that uses kana/kanji and none of that romaji stuff.

I had tried learning Japanese when I was younger, however the greatest mistake I've made was clinging to romaji. If you want to learn just focus on learning 100% of hira and katakana (don't skip on katakana since it's as useful as, if not more than, hiragana). After you can recognize effortlessly and flawlessly all kanas then you can move to grammar, vocabulary and kanji.

This is what I'm doing at least, to each their own.

>>323787419
Not that anon, but I also learned English from videogames (A lot of them) and tv shows. Listening was tricky with some English accents, but all in all I just watched shows without subs. It's weird because the first 5-10 minutes of the show you don't understand anything at all but then gradually your mind adapts and you start to understand everything without much of a problem. Obviously you need to be familiar with the language itself already, which can only happen through practice, good lessons, proper vocabulary, etc etc.

As a teenager I found out that a local bookstore had books in their native language (mostly English) and they were actually much cheaper than the translated books so I started buying those. I would read a whole book (around 400 pages) every week in English, at first it was very hard since most of my English was just highschool-tier and what you would get from videogames, but then I realized that my vocabulary grew significantly and I was much better than before.

Now I'm practically fluent in English and I even know it better than my native language (although I can't help having a bit of an accent when speaking, which is normal obviously).

Why not play new Japanese games before they get ported over to the west. Especially considering most of them don't even get localized in the first place.
>>
>>323788010
I have a language knob which is fucking annoying. Any language I watch for extended periods of time I learn automatically. Happened with English, French, German and now it's happening with Japanese.
>>
>>323787813
yeah, while you study the language in a classroom (or something like duolingo) you'll probably listen to a bit of pronunciation to kickstart your brain, and after a while you'll be able to understand a bit of speach. Just grab one of those series you like but don't care about missing plot points sometimes and watch it without subtitles.

Hell the way I put it make it seems so simple I think I'm gonna dive in japanese. I think duolingo have english-jap learning, I'll probably start doing that.

I'm the same, I grew up in a rural part of my country which has like 4 different dialects. Growing up as a little kid with elders all around you speaking 4 entirely different languages plus your own country's language does that to your brain. I picked up English with so little effort, I remember my English teacher asking my parents if I had anybody in the family being a native English speaker because my level was way above that of my peers. In reality I just played a lot of games and picked up an impressive vocabulary for a 10 year old non-native kid.

Then I moved to another country to study and I've picked the language over there without much effort as well. The problem I have with Japanese is the different writing system which has always fascinated me so it's a greater challenge than a lot of other languages. This is why I like it. By watching a lot of anime and listening to Japanese podcasts I've already picked up a lot of words and grammar without actually studying any of that actively. It feels nice.

Japanese grammar and pronunciation is easy as fuck though compared to French (and almost any other language out there).

Japanese is just hard because of the Kanji, hell both kanas are really easy once you spend a bit of effort in memorizing them. The real obstacle stopping Japanese from being the easiest language in the world is the fucking kanji.

French grammar is literally english grammar through a broken mirror.
Here's a paragraph from a random french newspaper article with all non-grammar words translated:
The attack suicide perpetrated according to the Terkey par « a millitant de Daech [acronym arab de the IS] », tuesday 12 january à Sultanahmet, a neighborhood qui symbolizes the power past de the Empire ottoman ainsi que the opening du country au tourism foreign, marks a turning, a new strategy de the organization jihadist, entered en war open against the state turk.
Now do the same to a japanese article and you'll get complete giberish.

i mean, in the wealthiest parts (which are the interesting ones) you have english, but i get how knowing how to read arab documents is a plus, besides their english isn't the best, especially not with the indians and filipinos they bring over to work.
>>
>>323789645
French grammar includes a shitton of verbs, the majority of which are irregular, which need to be conjugated in a different form depending on the tense, complex forms (like "en train de", etc etc, I forget how they are called in English) and the subject/object of the sentence.

In Japanese you get like what, 4-5 different rules for verbs that apply to 99% of them?

While the structure is similar to English (which is not a simple language), it doesn't mean much when you need to memorize a shitton of exceptions and irregularities in the first place.

I still have nightmare remembering the verb conjugation tests we used to have in school when I was learning French. Every week we'd be graded on how well we could conjugate two whole papers full of irregular verbs. Fucking Monday morning was the worst day of the week for three years straight. There's so much shit that is literal memorization without any obvious rule.
>>
>>323784164

Because I'm not fucking weebtrash and I don't play many chink games, and even if I did I'm not autistic enough to care about the translation.
>>
>>323789640
What "Asian language sound"? Pretty much all of them belong to different families. Or are you saying Eastern Iranian sounds the same as Japanese?
>>
>>323789436
>They're among the easiest aspects of the language, and they exist solely to make your life easier
That's absolute bullshit and you know it. Yeah, they have a lot of homonyms. Yeah, we've been conditioned to find script with only kana ugly and childish. That doesn't detract from the fact that kanji are the only thing you simply can't learn naturally by interacting with the language. Any language that uses a phonetic alphabet can be picked up by listening, watching subbed shit and reading. With Japanese you can easily pick up on all of the spoken language and still be entirely unable to read until you've memorized thousands of symbols.
It's literally the only part of learning a language that actually requires effort. The rest is all fun. I don't think it's surprising at all that people would complain about it. The Japanese spend much, much more time at school learning kanji than I ever did learning both my native language and English. And what do they gain? They could technically read texts written in other dialects, something that's only useful in a country as large as China where the dialects are more than changing ありがとう to おおきに.

Now, I actually love kanji for the extra depth in literary expression they allow, but saying that they make anybody's life easier is bullshit. Please give me some concrete examples as to how someone's life is made easier thanks to kanji. Excluding artificial character limits like twitter, please.

Left is stilted, unclear, awkward, and is no way how that particular character from that game world would talk. Nor is it how that character was intented to talk.

A little bit of rearranging of few words fixes the right but the left is a hopless, ambiguous mess. It sounds just like all translated games of the time did where large and informative text strings were dropped for short, robot-sounding, context insensitive ambiguous shit like the left.

>>
>>323791413
There's a difference between learning a language and taking classes, taking classes prepares you for taking tests, not for using an actual language.

The failure of highschool education in that regard should not be taken as the median in how learning languages works.
>>
>>323791401
and then you realize you'll need english subs forever because fags like to whisper in movies and shows
>>
>>323791174
Take it slow.

A common mistake is to want to learn everything all at once and then get burnt out.

When I started with kana I would just learn 5 every day. I know I could have probably learned much more than that, but I just limited myself with 5. I would do my lesson, practice writing them 50 times each on my notebook (good for memorizing) and then re-reading/reviewing the old ones to see if I was missing something or not. It would take me at most ~20 minutes everyday and it would always leave me with "man I wish I could do a bit more today, but I'll save it for tomorrow". This meant that every day I would want to learn just a little bit more. Baby steps.

When you get comfortable with kana and you want to learn more, go with memrise and a good starting vocabulary course that doesn't rely on romaji. Memrise is a nice phone app similar to Duolingo (which unfortunately doesn't have Eng -> Jap), you can set daily practice at a specific time every day and the app will remind you to take your lesson. You can spend 5 minutes or 30 minutes or whatever, depends how much you want to do, learning new words and reviewing old ones. I wouldn't recommend doing more than 30 minutes every day though, as I said you can burn out easily.

Even just by lurking around here you can find a lot of weeb posters with weeb images that have the occasional kanas and kanji, I always stop and try to translate those as my daily "unexpected" practice. Maybe go visit a few beginner Japanese news websites and practice here and there. It helps to have some friends who are also learning to motivate each other too.

I don't agree. They're all different from the originals, and I think it's worth prioritizing the original over translations, but it's technically possible that a translator is simply a better writer than the original writer. They can even misinterpret things and somehow end up with a better work. It's unlikely, but there's no reason it couldn't happen.

I'm a professional Japanese to English translator and to be honest, both sides of this image have their strengths and weaknesses.
Of course the left side seems like someone took the basic idea of the Japanese script and entirely rewrote it, something endemic to this era of Super Nintendo games. This is both a bad thing and a good thing, in that it can add a lot of "charm" (certain manner of speaking for certain characters, accents, etc.) that wouldn't be present in a direct translation of the original, but at the same time isn't really "true" to the original vision of the game.
The right side, while accurate in a direct translation sense, contains some very unwieldy phrases like "Take them with you without restraint" and "the mayor of this house" that serve little more than to pull you out of the game and make you realize you are reading a translation.
>>
>>323791793

>>
>>323791174
>How do you guys discipline yourselves to actually practice every day?
I don't. I only learn kanji on the train to uni.
That said, I run into a lot of Japanese just browsing the internet, so there's a lot of incidental practice. I also listen to seiyuu radio shows as listening practice, though to be fair listening was already my strong point.
>>
>>323791474
The translation on the right is absolutely awful. Clearly done by a total amateur.

The one on the left attempts to localise and shorten the dialogue, because Japanese is about twice as fast as English. It's not great work, but it's miles better than the right.

I mean, it's obviously supposed to be the mayor's assistant, so why would she talk like an overexcited retard ? Maybe she got the job by sucking his cock ? I don't take her seriously.
The right one is business-like, and information-heavy. This is a good assistant for the mayor, wasting neither her's or the visitor's time..

Some people like translating. Maybe some writer even ran into something he thought more people needed to read or something.
I've seen some Dutch and German translations of the Aeneid that, in my opinion, actually rival the original. I wouldn't quite dare say they're better but it's pretty damn impressive. It seems perfectly possible for something to just be more well-written. There are tons of shit writers, though obviously Vergilius isn't one of them.
