What are the best dungeon crawling games?
>>
I started playing Grimrock recently. It's pretty cool but it kinda forces you to cheese everything by shutting a door in its face because otherwise you just take way too much damage.

Like that room on level 2 with the switch and three skeletons. I got like three salvos in on the first one while hopping to the side and back to dodge when I suddenly got wedged into the corner by the second one. Kept focusing on the first one to break free and got gangbanged anyway.

>It's pretty cool but it kinda forces you to cheese everything by shutting a door in its face because otherwise you just take way too much damage.
2 is much better in that regard.
>>
I've been thinking about giving diablo ii another go lately. Do the rebalance mods make it plausible to get and enjoy all the rarer stuff by the end of hell without drowning in a flood of garbage? I'd hate to pick a hybrid build and not be able to make the runeword for it without save editing, or have to do hundreds of baal runs or whoever it was that gave good drops.

Would you consider a game like Nethack a dungeon crawler? What about Daggerfall or Skyrim where you spend most of your time in dungeons?

Yes to Nethack, yes to Daggerfall.

2 feels like a much better game all together from what I've played so far. I like the more varied environments and enemies it has over 1.
>>

game would be much better if it was turn based
>>

Dungeonsiege 1/2 are pretty cool and something different, because you control a whole group like a raid through dungeons. Otherwise, I can reinstall diablo2 any day and start a new character with some talentbuild to try out

There's a game sorta like that, Fall of the Dungeon Guardians, except it uses WoW style combat(tank/healer/dps) and you can pause it whenever you want to queue up commands or just do it in real time. It's alright, but the writing is atrocious.

The last 2 don't exclusively limit you to a dungeon, but definitely has 99% the aspect of them.

Can I play Grimrock 2 if I didn't play grimrock 1? I tried, but god it was boring. You know how in some dungeon crawlers you actually get tired of enemies being harder than in the previous floors? It's like usually you like the sense of progression, being able to get better weapons and armors and fight stronger monsters, like in Etrian Odyssey or SMT, but in some games you just start thinking "Why keep playing? They are gonna get stronger and stronger and I'll have to grind them every time.." That happened to me in Grimrock.

I just hate how easy the game is if you use the 2x2 bullshit tactic. It's like, once you're aware of that the game is practically impossible to lose. It just isn't fun anymore.
>>
>>323728002
Most of the enemies of the midgame you eventually get a good handle on. The there's two more types that appear near the end, though one that should only really bother you in one area. It really depends on the gear/team you have though, I gathered most treasures so I had pretty good equipment and even then I did sometimes have the same feeling of going through the motions rather than actually having fun. If the atmosphere and puzzling aren't doing it for you either I would say you could skip it.

I haven't played 2 yet so can't say anything about that but there's not much lore to be missed I suppose, only something about the guy writing the notes and the nature of what lies in the deepest part of the dungeon.

You have to admit this is a pretty good dungeon crawl.

Backpedal in a circle so you never get hit. Gets mroe difficult with more than one enemy, though. You can also slam a door shut in something's face after getting a couple hits in.

>Skyrim

Breh... What?
>>
Alright, here's the question:

For tile-based dungeon crawlers on PC, what should be strafe, and what should be turn?

AD?
QE?

I've seen this either way.
>>
>>323730646
AD should be strafe since every fucking game since 2005 uses A and D to move left-right.
>>
>>323730646

Q-E for strafe
>>
>>323730414
More and more stuff I fight in grimrock 2 have counters to that at least. The plan is less effective

The rats just throw daggers at you
Those small tree guys shoot poison at you

If I try to be more aggressive about it and just keep circling around all the enemies have attacks that quickly go off from other sides
>>
Is Arx Fatalis a dungeon crawler?

I didn't like 2 as much as 1. It felt like it had more combat (which is by far the worst part of the games - the Ratling boss is a good example of this; messy fight that's just difficulty because trash mobs surrounds you and makes kiting a pain), and the outdoor environments just didn't appeal to me as much as the seemingly never-ending claustrophobic dungeons of 1. The Air Elementals were pure bullshit, and I'll never understand why you'd put an enemy in your game that there's a chance the player just can't kill. And then have that enemy spawn in earlier areas, when they decide to go back and try another area first. It's more polished, though, so that's a plus.

Might & Magic 6 has some of the best dungeons ever seen in a video game

the gameplay itself isnt that good however, you basically just spam the attack key and occasionally use healing magic
>>
>>323732504
Mah nigga, although I have some nostalgia-fueled preference for 7 and 8 over 6.

>>
>>323730892
By those criteria God of War is a dungeon crawler
>>
>>323729937
So is God of War then. Just because you can level up items and armor doesn't mean a game is an RPG. When you dilute the meaning of a term so much it loses all significance.

Dark Souls is Action/Adventure

Deathtrap Dungeon.

You are supposed to kite enemies, ideally not taking any damage. Learn to square dance.
>>
>>323731306
I wouldn't call it challenging. Only tedious.
Level scaling turn enemies into sponges and you eventually have to rely on sneaking to make the battles quicker.
There's one puzzle where you have to orient four statues according to something like a poem that got me thinking. Everything else are not-puzzles since the keys also have the fucking combination on it (wait a minute, that claw!).

The biggest problem I have with Grimrock is the magic system. Not because of the system itself, but because they make you use the mouse for it when it would fit perfectly and be far more convenient to regularly use if you could control it with the numpad.
>>
>>323731079
You can still finish the game without setting foot in the pyramid. That's a stupid mistake tho
>>
>>323735706
But then you would have to take your hand off of the mouse and put it on the numpad. That seems way less intuitive.
>>
Does anyone played mordor? If i remember correctly it was some decent crawler.

>>
>>323735876
My mouse is directly next to the numpad, so I'd have no problem with that. I find it more of a pain moving the cursor around all of the runes every time.
It would've been nice to have the option.
>>
>>323735706
Considering your mouse is pretty much always down by the portrait anyway, I think it's fine.

I like the magic system, having to select the correct runes makes magic more hectic in the middle of combat

Is that actually a cheese tactic? I didn't play the first game and backpedaling in a circle came pretty naturally to me. Do people actually tank the monsters?
>>
>>323723874
This and EO are the best i've played.
>>
>>323736307
I got this game when I was like 12, and spent quite a long time undressing my female character. When I was finally sated, I'd play the game for awhile until it inevitably crashed.
>>
>>323737252
I don't think anybody tanked the monsters - at least anybody that got past the first floor.

Getting backed into a situation where you have to tank something is a horrible thing. Anybody should figure out that backpedalling every monster is the correct thing to do
>>
>>323737252
not really a point to having a tanky guy if you can do the whole game with that
>>
>>323728002
The main thing that bugged me about Grimrock 1 was that there seemed to be too many fights that each took too long. Either have more weaker monsters or fewer stronger ones (preferably the latter, so combat actually feels significant), but not both.

Perhaps my build was bad, hence why fights were taking so long, but I found myself think "Eugh, another minotaur thing. Can I just avoid it this time?"

>>
>>323737756
Just because you can tank damage doesn't mean you should do it. Having frontline fighters is important because you will be forced to tank sometimes, and you don't want a team of 4 squishy characters if that happens
