It's not about the security risk. It's about the sheer inconvenience. The multiplayer of the game is severely fractured because you need to seek people to play with.
It's truly not that difficult to set up a simple lobby system with matchmaking. All it would take is one server. It wouldn't even have to host games; just serve as a middleman to help people find and connect to one another when they're already playing the game. This has been used for decades.
