ASW has a pretty tight lock on casual arcade players with BlazBlue. They did try to expand the Guilty Gear audience with Xrd, but BB remains more popular with Japanese casuals.

Fighting games are the ultimate casual filter. It requres research, dedication, practice, many things casual audiences can do without. Even with "combo buttons" allowing you to mash and get combos, you still need to learn proper spacing and blocking to hold your own in any match.
Casuals just don't have the time or patience to learn fighting games.
Only if:
The Tutorials are genuinely good and comprehensive
The Training mode that has every option under the sun
It has non shitty single-player modes (something unique for each character)
All players use wired connections

Xrd has a godlike tutorial that explains the game flow very well even if you never had any contact with fighting games before, and its mission and challenge mode are enough for the player to be ready to play against someone without looking too bad.
Of course people need to actually do the large amount of tutorials and missions, and judging from what I keep encountering online on player matches it surely isn't the case for most people.
