because it's an MMO that's not just about endgame.
It's becoming more endgame focused it seems like, but just because you don't have 99 in all combat stats doesn't mean you've got nothing to do besides level.

It has an expansive, fully-interactable game world that provides the player with a genuine feeling of adventure, rare enough in RPGs but especially rare in MMOs.

Its a shame they had to release Runescape 2 and such, You would think it would of been easier to take everything from Runescape 1 and then just add on to that with a new engine and new skills not replace what already works.
I only ever played RuneQuest eleven years ago and only got to the desert before dropping it for some reason (because of member's only zones, I think).

Runescape does not have professions, classes, or anything that restricts the player in that sense. Pretty much everything is available to every player. There is a large emphasis on non-combat skills, if that is what you mean.

Runescape has to be my favorite MMO of all time even if I'll never play it again. The gameplay is atrocious. Nothing they've added in the last 10 years has fixed that. But it has the best sense of humor, the best music, and the best quest system of all time.
One thing I really liked about the world that's gone to shit a bit more recently is how the overworld felt like a real overworld, most of the fighting and demons and shit happened in literally hell or dungeons, but just walking around was safe enough.
I might have to admit Runescape is why I love puns as much as I do today. Just look at the White Knights. Holy fucking shit.

RSC was inherently not about end game. On release you couldn't even do anything with max-level skills. The idea was that 99 was so ridiculously high that it was supposed to simulate infinity.

The best thing about Runescape was being a teenager in middle or high school and how everyone fucking played.
I don't know how it was at your school, but each friend group had its own players that rarely interacted outside their own groups even in RS, so there were like 8 or 9 groups of RS players.

On one hand, it's ridiculously convenient to get anywhere.
On the other hand, it diminishes the sense of accomplishment and makes the world feel a bit empty when you will practically never see someone walking the path from Seers to Fremmenik provinces again.
I don't think any game has given me such a sense of entering a larger world than opening that big iron gate into Taverley for the first time.

The power of Java
The problem I have with OSRS is that everyone knows exactly what they're doing now. Everything that isn't grinding is exp waste. I miss when people were willing to play minigames and have house parties and stuff for fun. Personally for me I nostolgia hard for this game, I remember farming giants for giant bones so I could sell them for a rune 2 hander, and some rich guy on my server said he would trade me one for like 500 bones or something like that(cant remember), so I ended up getting the bones and grinding my attack stats, finally get it, he trades me the 2 hander right away for the bones, and then I slowly but surely trade over all of the bones to him.
Later that week he kills me in the wilderness and takes it, I message him about it and he said he'd give it back for 100 more giant bones. Nice guy, sold him lots of lobsters too.
