A majority of Sonic games are easy to emulate or cheap on steam. The only one thats stuck on consoles is Sonic Unleashed, and you'll need more than the renting time to beat it. If you can find Unleashed for like 10 or 20 bucks its a good investment and pretty long game and theres tons of side missions, things to collect, hubs etc that are polished and interesting. The wii/ps2 version is fucking terrible. The day stages are terribly hacked together and there are way more night stages. Continents were removed, hubs are gone, mechanics are lacking, speed is way slower compared to the other one.

Night stages weren't bad to me, the combat was easy but pretty fun, and the slow platforming was very solid, I don't really run into any glitches in those levels, it just feels like more love went into it.

Unleashed and Gens had different control physics; there's a mod that lets you import the former to the latter as part of the latter if you prefer that. So the physics for how the game actually controls are definitely determined by the dev team, and it's only because Gens was literally shat out at the last minute because some intern reminded them that Sonic's 20th anniversary was coming up that Classic Sonic's physics were so garbage.
It's possible to have solid controls while still using Havok for environmental physics, the devs just need to actually give a shit for once.

I dont see why they cant recycle a bunch of assets from generations and use them to make new levels.
They could make the death egg from the classic sonic boss fight area. They can make final rush with the shadow boss fight area. They can use the casino pinball bonus to make a casino level from sonic 2 or heroes. They can use stardust speedway from the metal sonic boss fight to make a real stardust speedway level.
Speed highway, city escape, and rooftop run could be used to make another urban city level. Green hill can be retooled into emerald hill. Generations is a game ripe for recycling and reusing assets and just building off of them. Fuck they could even go back to unleashed and pull some of that data to make ice cap or angel island with holoska or adabat. The hedgehog engine is fucking amazing

I think of it like other platformers.
In Mario games, I'm always holding down the B button to run.
In Mega Man X/Zero/ZX, I'm constantly dashing.
In Sanic 3D I'm always boosting.
So in LW, there's nothing wrong with having a run button.
That said, the level design itself is boring as shit. The best 3D Sonic levels are rooted in reality, not floating planetoids. Look at City Escape. Terminal Velocity. Emerald Coast. Launch Base. All of them are places you might expect to see in some unspecified time in the future or even today.
Lost World just gives you a bunch of disconnected spheres with a spring connecting them.
