The bandits have a chance of dropping the mask they wear, but I don't think any enemy other than bosses drop weapons.
And there are quite a few side quests that reward you with gear, every treasure chest has its own loot table, and pretty much all of them have a chance of dropping some sort of gear.
But early on in the game new armor and weapons are mostly bought.
Should've figured PCasuals wouldn't be able to figure out how to properly make a good pawn.

Just make it utilitarian/challenger, they'll buff you as soon as you enter combat or if you use the help command. Which is imo the main thing you'd want from a mage.
They'll still drop everything to heal you or remove status effects, which is actually something you want unless you want fill your inventory with curatives and play the whole game running at a snail's pace.
High halidom is pretty fucking good, and cures everything aside from petrification I think.

they are and are not copies. Anything the pawn learns while in your game they still know when they get dismissed and "return" to their master.
