ummm... for its time it was the strongest piece of hardware out there when it first came out. PS2 is literally way stronger than the dreamcast and any other system that was released out at the time of release in March 4th, 2000. Of course later generations the Xbox and gamecube came out, but the Xbox was much later and gamecube wasn't as strong.

Ok first things first. I'll admit up front modern FPS are not a genre I generally care for. Secondly I don't think this game is godawful or anything like that. It's generally good at what it does and it seems to be as good as other generic military shooters I have played.
That being said I really don 't get the hype. I tried this and a few of the other "only good ones in the series" according to most people a few months back and it just really seems to be average or just functional in every regard I can think to rate it by. Also the multi in Every CoD I tried is just plain fucking dismal and seems designed to fail from the start. MW2 is the one people always say is the best and one of the greatest shooters of all time and I really just don't get why.

Sounds like you never played MG2, and never played MGS1 on harder difficulties. That isn't surprising though, 3D Zelda fans value made for baby game design above all else.
Going back to the Metal Gear discussion, having the same perspective doesn't mean much if the feel of gameplay is entirely different. MGS1 feels much smoother and responsive, and the inclusion of first person means scouting guards and seeing their patrol route. Something essential if you don't play just on normal or easy.
MGS1 stealth is easy as fuck once you remember guard routes. And unlike Metal Gear 2, fumbling around different areas with keycards trying to progress isn't an issue.
Once you know your shit, MGS1 becomes a boss rush game with the coolest boss designs, both visually and in a gameplay sense.
Metal Gear 2 had niggers named Shotgun Man or Shot Man, boss fights were cheap and the bosses themselves were jokes when it came to story shit.
