They both require a bit of exploration into the world. Once you do that they're perfectly viable games. They throw good weapons and means to improve those weapons at you. They "punish" you by throwing you back to pretty reasonable checkpoints where you can speed past people. Then they provide both static NPC and multiplayer summon spots with convenants to correlate.
