I'm pretty sure I had to drop a second power bomb after looking it up on the internet. I tried the first time because I saw that it would probably be the answer, don't know why it took 2 though.

I played SM for the first time last year and actually got stuck there.

there was another broken tube just like that one. and the map and plataform gave it away that you had to get out of there. I actually though to myself "Maybe I should destroy the tube?, Nah, the game is too old, I dont think it has destructinle enviroments" then after wandering for like 3 days I decided to blow a bomb on it. and it worked. it gave me that TECHNOLOGY feel that MGS gives

Well her second mission was an attempted genocide of an alien species, concluding with the abduction and indoctrination of the species' last remaining survivor, immediately followed by the destruction of an entire planet. She's like the galaxy's uber-terrorist.

They should have either placed a few power bomb bricks in the room that you could scan from inside the tube, or put cracks on the glass. I think that would make it clearer without ruining the puzzle for everyone else.

I never considered it. After playing games like megaman I just figured it was a transition room that had no purpose. I did not even think to break the glass.
I thought it was odd that the map had rooms above and below, but I did not expect to be able to reach them from that tunnel, rather from elsewhere.

This is why FO4 is a badly designed game; because they don't follow patterns. It's incredibly arbitrary when only certain NPCs can be killed and others can't. It makes problem solving that much more difficult in games, henceforth resulting in the hand holding/words popping up on the screen telling you what to do shtick

>>
>>323515371
Fuck that, the internet melt my brain and made me grow lazy, i can't even deal with puzzles anymore without having this uncontrollable urge to just close the game and look it up on the internet
>>
Look, I get we gotta shit on hand-holding tutorials and idiots nowadays, but let's not pretend every game had subtle ways of revealing every last thing. Super Metroid did it great, but not perfectly. The breaking glass thing was incredibly random.
>anyone's first reaction would be to try bombs, notice that nothing happens, and assume it's just a random hallway
>breaking a glass wall is used here, and never again or before in the entire game
>nothing in that room indicates you can break it
>nothing in the game implies you can shatter an obstacle like that. Everything before is just bombing holes in the ground and shit.
Face it, it was an instance of bad design. A much more logical way of presenting it would have been to place enemies on the outside of the tube to make the player think "if there's an enemy...there has to be a way to get out there". I don't get why everyone has to save face and say "nah you're an idiot. I figured it out right away because 8 year old me was a fucking genius". You figured it out the same way we all did: dumb luck or your older brothers friend told you.
>>
>>323514269
Millennials are defined as born between 1984-2004, or something close to that. Though I don't agree with that, because of the wildly different sensibilities of the latter-half "millennials" as a result of the 90s tech boom.

The true millennials, that actually were coming of age in our mid-to-late-teens (which is where the term is supposed to come from), were around 7-13 when Super Metroid came out. We were absolutely the target audience.

I'm not mad or anything. I just thinking you're spouting words you don't understand to sound cool.

Actually I'm kind of wondering why games aren't MORE cryptic nowadays since we do have the internet.

You've got dudes trying to piece together stories like Bloodborne and Dark Souls in terms of lore. Can't you have games with puzzles that work the same way? You know, have a community piece it together.
>>
>>323515696
As far as i can remember that was the only game that really got me stuck for good, depending of what game it was i always tried things like backtracking or talking to all the NPCs, the reason why i was fucked so hard by that part in particular though is because i was expecting to have lost some alternative path somewhere else, i even remember thinking that area had this two layer thing where you would move horizontally while inside the tube but eventually you would reach the underwater part, and when reaching that screen you would just move behind the tube
>>
>>323515696

That shit would suck for those of us who like to figure shit out on our own without looking it up.

I'm the sort that will just quit playing if I can't figure it out.
>>
>>323516043
Because puzzles aren't fun, people play video games to either kill time or escapism, sometimes both, those who search for escapism are into immersion, even if that means losing hours of their lives to the game, those looking for killing time don't give a shit and just want to shoot things, this is why games like Skyrim are so damn popular, even with the shitty RPG mechanics they are still great if you're just going for a quick "let's clean this dungeon" session, and having puzzles that are too hard would just kill the flow for you
>>
>>323513038

speaking of this

>at the institute where your son is behind a glass wall
>think i need to sit in the room waiting for someone to walk through the doors
>cant think of what to do
>accidentally open dialogue with the NPC through the glass wall, something that was never before done in a bethesda game and never happened again
>>
>>323516043
Because Devs spend an inordinate amount of money and time attempting to make games look cool, otherwise they don't sell. The dev cycles are already ridiculously long for most games, cash-in-sequels not withstanding. So you end up with less time to put content in the game. It's pretty bad.

Although that level of crypticness doesn't appeal to me, I don't disagree with your sentiment at all. I find a lot of contemporary games to be all style and very little (if any actual) substance.
>>
>>323505021
You could get to the same spot in Maridia coming in from above. There's clearly room to go down and the map shows it as well. After that, you try out your limited arsenal and voila.
>>
>>323505021

The random rocks you had to blow up to progress were way worse.
>>
>>323516362
Yeah. You're actually "supposed" to come through Maridia by the top-down route, aren't you?
>>
>>323516281
Come on, we know that's not true of everyone. Some people like overcoming the challenge of a game. I don't think anyone gets "immersed" in games like Gradius, Bayonetta, or Guilty Gear. Some people like skill testing games.
>>
>>323516652
Just occured to me now that you're being facetious. Disregard this reply, I suck cocks, etc.
>>
>>323513872
The ultimate casual filter right here.
>>
>>323516839
Don't act like that, its just how things work, as for your previous statement, people don't need challenge or the feeling of accomplishment to consider a game good, they just need the illusion of those things

To be fair with the companies though, people always expect every sequel to be a direct upgrade of the original in every single way, they expect you to use new gear and create a game that only expands on size, when you have this much shit to be considered, and needing to pull that before your franchise becomes irrelevant and expectations grow too much (Duke Nukem Forever) you really need to get your shit together, i am not saying there aren't lazy devs out there, but there is a reason why so much money is put into graphics and marketing these days, because making your game look good will make people pay for it, even if the game is shit it doesn't matter because they will have paid for it already, and shit like brand loyalty and patches/DLC will keep the fanbase fed and still wishing for more
>>
>>323516156
Except you're doing the same thing?
>It's not at all hard to figure out for anyone who's used to 80s and 90s video games.
>"It wasn't hard for me. So it can't be hard for anyone"
I grew up on the NES/SNES and even I'll admit, that shit was incredibly cryptic and not nearly as simple to figure out as /v/ always parades it around. You don't "learn to power bomb everything", least of all random glass tubes that never appear before or after one hallway in the entire game that don't even show off any physical signs of being breakable. I figured it out, but it boiled down to extremely stupid dumb luck of trying the right thing at the right place. And it's not a reach to assume that's how most people (more realistically, children) figured out a puzzle with close to no hints.
>>323510339
This is better explained because you can visibly see that there must be a way to progress. More than one lone platform that could easily just be for decoration. Argue all you want, but that doesn't suddenly make this a simple puzzle to figure out. Again I say, throwing in some enemies would have solved the whole problem and made the player come to a conclusion of "I've tried everything, but there's killable shit out there. There's gotta be a way", or putting an earlier puzzle where a glass wall or something could be broken with missiles or fuck, when you get the power bombs show some glass breaking. There's countless subtle ways to show that you can break that shit and they didn't do a single one. You don't even obtain the power bombs near that fucking area so you would have already exhausted every option of advancing from there and just written it off. I hate how /v/ pretends that our generation somehow had adult levels of problem and puzzle solving, being able to figure out an incredibly cryptic puzzle with nothing to go off of simply because games. I'm sick of this thread being made all the time just so we can pretend we didn't actually get stuck at shit as kids.
>>

>>323517825

>Except you're doing the same thing?

Nice try. Now re-read what I wrote and come back. I never said that at all, I just told you not to assume that you set the bar for humanity. I'm not even arguing that everything back then could be figured out with a bit of logic because it couldn't The glass tube, however, was not a hard to figure out puzzle if you payed attention. Why some people didn't start spamming the shit out of Power Bombs upon learning their usefulness, I'll probably never know.

This is reminding me of those arguments in Dragon Quest threads where people will say that if you can read thick accents in text at a fairly normal page and have few comprehension issues, or random commas in words to aid the illusion of an accent don't throw you off, then you're a fucking liar.

You implied that anyone who grew up with the games we did had to have been able to figure it out. Literally you said
>It's not at all hard to figure out for anyone who's used to 80s and 90s video games
I'm hardly implying I set the bar for humanity by arguing most people figured out an incredibly hard to solve puzzle by either dumb luck or being told.
>was not a hard to figure out puzzle if you payed attention
Too what exactly? I assume you're just gonna copy and paste your original post so
>Suddenly find yourself on a screen that looks different.
>You're in a glass container
>Looks like you can go up and down
>Even see a broken tube elsewhere
>After getting Power Bombs you soon learn to Power Bomb everything
None of that leads a player to believe they can destroy a glass tube. Tons of rooms look "different", that hardly means a thing. There are other rooms that are simply just hallways. You see a broken container, but YOU did not break it.
>Why some people didn't start spamming the shit out of Power Bombs upon learning their usefulness, I'll probably never know.
Because you have zero reason to assume to do so in that room. Again I say: at NO point in the game do you break a glass object. Why can't you just admit it's not a well put-together puzzle? Again I offer solutions that would have actually made it easier without being hand-holding
>show glass breaking upon obtaining the power bombs
>put in an earlier glass object that could be broken
>enemies on the outside
>fuck make a glass type enemy that only super bombs harm
The fact that the only examples you're offering of why it's easy consist of "the room is different, and I spammed the power bomb everywhere" shows it's an incredibly poorly put-together room. Especially when other parts of the game perfectly demonstrate new upgrades and means of traveling. Like using background animals to show you can wall jump, and then using the same animals to show you can jump higher using a speed boost.

>None of that leads a player to believe they can destroy a glass tube. Tons of rooms look "different", that hardly means a thing. There are other rooms that are simply just hallways. You see a broken container, but YOU did not break it.

It's one of two types of that room in the game and it has a distinguishing feature unlike, say, a hallway.

>Why can't you just admit it's not a well put-together puzzle?

Because I think it was pretty obvious.

>It's not at all hard to figure out for anyone who's used to 80s and 90s video games

That was me making assumptions and forgetting that there were always people who couldn't solve puzzles in games. I guess I did do what you did.
>>
>>323520017

But dude, you NEVER had to break glass again. It was a bad puzzle, no one could figure that shit out. At least developers don't pull that shit nowadays, they always give you clues.

You can see the tube room extends both upwards and downwards and IIRC this is further emphasized by the fact you can see small enemies going up and down the walls if you wait a while in the tube room.
More importantly you come across this room which shows similar tube being broken which should give an idea to try to blow up the other one.
Being able to blow up the tube is shown in the intro demo if you wait long enough and yes, I'm aware that this only happens if the game is already beat once but if you bought a second hand copy of Super Metroid it's more than likely the previous owner(s) has already beaten the game.
Supposedly there was a commercial of Super Metroid showing being able to blow up the tube but since I don't live in burgerland I don't know whether or not this is true.

How were you supposed to know to jump over or on the goomba here? I mean the game doesn't give you any indication that you can do that and it's something you must do in order to advance. I'm glad that I dropped this piece of shit game because of this artificial difficulty bullshit.

How much longer until we see this posted as "valid complaint" from modern hardcore gamers, /v/?

Look kid, I know you're trying to act smarter than everyone, all kids do, but enough is enough. I don't like to brag but I'm a pretty smart guy. I was an all A student in school even back in elementary. My parents always used to tell me about how fast I learned things like walking and talking and reading. My IQ is 133. If I couldn't figure that shit out, no one could. Not on purpose. Someone got Nintendo Power or called the Nintendo Hotline or had a lucky accident and it spread that way, that's how your older brother knew how to use a Power Bomb. If he told you that he discovered it himself, he was also lying. Why can't you admit that? Oh yeah, because you're a kid.

It actually doesn't count at all unless you GET. But you can only say you were close if you were a few numbers lower, or one number over.

Because the game also gives you the x-ray visor as if to say "congratulations, now you don't have to autistically power bomb the room from corner to corner anymore".

That reminded me of watching a Japanese playing Fallout 4, and he refused to jump off the building after getting his first power-armour. Anyone who had seen the demo would already know that you don't get fall damage in power armour, but that guy obviously never watched it.
