If we're talking about a post-post-apocalyptic like Fallout 2 where civilization has somewhat started to rebuild, then yes, I could see it. Women thrive in civilized environments where they can be privileged enough to have control of others, I can't see them having control of anything in an environment that involves combat, and no brutish idiot band of bandits is going to respect a woman or band of women and will either just kill them or take them.

To be real though, I don't think a woman makes a realistic or likely hero in anything but fantasy. In fantasy a woman would fit right in - an unlikely hero rises above her ranks and etc, etc - but in other genres, it just doesn't seem very likely based on anecdotal and some scientific evidence.

Yes, I think they can exist but when they do it's mostly tomboys or complete fantasy where even a kid could be a hero.
Motoko Kusanagi is one example of a female strong character I enjoy a lot. Female heros tend to do better the more futuristic the setting is because they're not reliant on brute physical strength but weapons, machines and their intelligence.
