4 is the natural evolution of Brawl. Melee and 4 don't even use the same engine while Brawl and 4 do. Features retained from Brawl (besides basic gameplay elements shared by all post-Melee games):
>10 frame input buffer
>lack of momentum retention
>lack of analog shield density
>faster shield drop animations, making them safer
>longer perfect shield window
>power shields no longer reflect projectiles (which halved their damage, but had less recovery frames than most reflecting attacks)
>simplified ECB resulting in less consistent tech windows
>aerial ECB bottom point at foot height like Brawl rather than knee height like Melee, meaning aerials can't land as deep before entering a landing state
>higher jumpsquat frames across the board
>dead input window on dashes, resulting in far less freedom to dash dance
>lower gravity
>lower knockback
>stale move negation affects knockback, making you "save" killer moves (unlike Melee where if you get the frame advantage to use a move, you use it, because the knockback will be the same when your opponent makes that mistake again)

Anyone who doesn't care for any of that has no reason to stop playing Melee. The games and audiences are completely different, so there's no duty to "move on" to one or the other. Personally, I'd rather just play Melee until the day it dies and never play any other SSB competitively again.
