part of the reason I was interested in chivalry in the first place was because it advertises itself as a mostly realistic medieval combat game. I want the medieval combat to make sense and not use impossible physics.

It's like if you were playing battlefield and all the enemies started flying around shitting rockets like UT, realism has it's place and I believe chiv would be better suited to realistic combat.

Damage had no speed calculation, In mount and blade if someone decided he was going to try and be clever and hit you with a war cleaver at the exact start of his swing it will whiff and do no damage and will soon have an awlpike in his guts. In this it doesn't matter in the slightest of how fast the weapon is moving or at what point in the swing the opponent is hit, the damage calculation is flat.

Never liked that mechanic or lack thereof.

I'm just browsing the front page so not even going to read the full conversation, but if your referring to weapons doing an exact amount of damage regardless of when the swing connects, physics don't work that way.

In fact if you've played a non-shit game like Mount&Blade, in that game your swing has to land properly with a proper distance between you and your opponent. If for example you have a spear and your opponent is in your face, stabbing will result in a "Poke" where no or little damage occurs. The same applies if you swing a sword and your opponent is literally standing next to you.

The majority of this games problems stem from one thing-there isn't a Damage gradient throughout the length of your swing. Strikes should do the most damage towards the middle/end of a swing. The tail end and beginning should do less depending on the type of weapon used, as in warband.

Just a machinegun of "bullets" in a line. if you are moving your mouse all around you will only connect with a few but if you keep your mouse focused right on their body it will do goo damage.

I think I am one of the first draggers. About a week into release I would use a two handed sword, jump into a crowd screaming "THREEEEEE SIXTYYYYYYYYT" over the mic flail my mouse to the right, and get like 5 kills every time because knights are tanks and I could install hit all of them at once. Dragging is not skillful at all and does nothing to improve the game. It just makes a disconnect between the animation and what's actually happening. It means you have to have meta knowledge you can't really glean from playing. Dumb.

I like that aiming influences where you swing, but saying it isn't broken as fuck is hilariously wrong. Also duelers are fucking stupid and ruin every good server.

If it made me enjoy it more yeah. I don't bind myself to mechanics, especially if they're inherently flawed. In the case of Ascend the jetpack movement was already fucked before they nerfed speed. Leveling the playing field because you're too incompetent to fix a broken mechanic is preferable imo.

My favorite patch was the claymore or the halberd patch where they swung like 2x faster than any weapon like dagger speed and all i did was hold left mouse button down and parry and swing like 4x faster than anyone and you were impossible to be killed by anything but maybe getting faked by a Maul.

It just feels like TB stopped caring at some point.

Things like running up to someone, bending backwards, and starting a maul windup inside the other player's model for an unblockable hit is the norm now.

I still have fun occasionally jumping in with some friends to a big server but it's always for gimmicky shit like a spear squad or as group of sling archers.

you can't use your reflexes to block a lookdown overhead from a greatsword above 50 ms ping. you will get hit the exact instant that the animation shows signs of beginning. so unless you are inhuman and have a reaction time of 100-150ms or something, you will have to block pre-emptively, which will open you up for a look-up overhead or just waiting 0.3 seconds before swinging your sword. the game isn't really balanced for attacks that have no telegraphs.

you can do the same thing with the norse sword stab but it's 100% more cancerous to do it with the greatsword because it deals like half your health as damage.
