Thing is, the game allows you to chose any pokemon to put in your party. Up to six. The more pokemon, the less interactivity between characters is involved because the characters are interchangeable.
Now if they had it so that you had actual trainer companions...that might work out better. Think Persona 3 or 4. Where you can have any pokemon, but your companions have a set team they can use.

There's hundreds of ideas Pokemon can have, and there's a shit ton of things they could potentially do with the franchise, but refuse to do it, because Nintendo/Gamefreak prefers to play it safe over anything else, and I guarantee if they made something actually serious or even mature that they'd get a fuckton of people interested.
Also, for whatever reason, they treat the humans as the most interesting part of it and treat them as the center focus, while the Pokemon are just kinda there, and it really needs to be the opposite. Games like Mystery Dungeon and whatnot are so great because it doesn't focus on the humans, it focuses on the Pokemon, the actual interesting part of the series. But you know, gotta have that self-insert because Japan.
TPC are too scared to let anything "tarnish" their precious brand. They didn't even let Nintendo use shit like sound effects for their Mario Maker costumes.

For those who are talking about Pokemon Super Mystery Dungeon (I'm not the OP).
I can't wait for PSMD to come here in Europe. I pre ordered it just now because I think it's a good Pokemon Mystery Dungeon title. I really love the PMD franchise, Explorers of Sky is one of my favorite if not my favorite game of all time. The PMD games come close to what would be my dream Pokemon game with the concept of being a Pokemon living in a world with only Pokemon
But there is one thing that's bothering me about the situation PMD is in. I wish (the concept of) PMD was more popular. I mean, it'sprobably one of Pokemon's biggest spin off series, if not the biggest spin off series. But I think there is potential for the concept of PMD to be more popular.
I understand why it isn't as popular as say the main series Pokemon games. I personally like the Roguelike style the PMD games are having. It's not my favorite kind of gameplay, but it is still very enjoyable for me. But I think the gameplay is one of the major things that holds PMD back. As much as I like the gameplay, it's pretty niche. I've heard a lot of times that people like everything about PMD, but that the gameplay ruins it for them.
What do you guys think about this?

Am I in backwards world? The beginning was slow and handholdy as fuck. It didn't get good until that SOL shit ended and the story started moving. All that felt pointless and kiddy. It lacked any sense of excitement, tension, and adventure until that school stuff was over. It was cute but the latter parts of the game were a lot better.
