But yeah, under a year is more than doable, kanas take a day each, all kyouiku kanji took me 3 months and the rest of jouyou + about 300 more hyougaiji took me 6 months more, SRS makes remembering those shits pretty easy.Even knowing kanji you will still need a couple of years to accumulate the vocabulary, though.
The hardest part of Kanji is learning to write this shit, and you can completely ignore it if you just want to play vidya.

Localisations are terrible these days. They were pretty bad in the early 90s (Woolseyism shit, aka dumb pop culture references), got better towards the end(actual translation work, MGS is the best example), and then plummeted in quality over the 00s (horrible overly literal translations that sound stilted, or jam packed with memes, the new pop culture phenomenon).
I honestly don't give a fuck about the vast majority of weeb games, but if you're into them, you seriously shouldn't be playing them in English.

You might not have much drive for just video games but if you truly want to learn the language you should give yourself more reason to learn it. There's a ton of untranslated content that might pique your interest and there's nothing wrong with learning the language just to learn it either.
