XII so far.
I've only beaten VI since deciding to play the whole series like a month ago. I'm halfway through II, IV, and V and they just don't compare. VI is pretty great though.

Hard to say for sure but I like 1, 4 and 5 the most probably.
7 had pretty interesting world but I don't feel like playing it again (I will play remake, but I mean I don't ever feel like replaying the original). I never played 8 or 9, but I hear from /v/ that 9 is really good and it's no-frills, solid, return to classic FF.

Probably VII. Just finished my latest playthrough and now I can't wait for XV and VII R
V, and then IX. I've finished all of them except for the MMOs, III and the XIII line, the latter of which I'm currently in the process of doing. 10 or so hours in XIII, taking short breaks to write my thoughts about the game so I can judge it properly.
I just really adore everything about V's sense of adventure and job system as well as IX's artstyle, character design and soundtrack.

I'm more of a fan of Dragon Quest 7 myself and happy we are finally getting both 3DS games.
Anyways Final Fantasy 4 is my favorite. Love the characters and felt like the game had a more natural progression even if it got a bit weird. "Hey lets just go to the fucking moon!"

Final Fantasy VIII Disc II has probably the best setpieces in the entire franchise [the chaos in Garden, the activation of the defense system making it mobile, NORG's theme, the Garden aeria battle] and what is probably my favorite protagonist in the entire franchise. Squall by the end of Disc II is a wonderful character whose arc is all about learning to balance his tendency towards self-reliance and his feelings towards others with the expectations and responsabilities thrust upon him as a leader, not just of a party, but of an entire organization.
And then Disc III completely ruins everything.

Lightning Returns. I love just attacks and guards. Materia in any form (in this case Schemata) as customization is fucking great. Freedom and atmosphere are excellent too. Everything else is ignorable or so assbackwards/unpolished it's amusing.

Junction is actually kinda fun after you learn how to abuse it. Item refining and drawing points mean you don't have to use Draw on everything till you have 100 like some dumbasses will tell you.
Story in Disc 1 and 2 is actually really nice when it comes to establishing a world's rules and building some suspense. Later on it shits itself tho.
Seifer is a very nice antagonist andfucking splits Odin in half holy shit.
Laguna segments are great and even funny. Too bad later on they eventually have to end.
