I actually had this discussion with someone before I got into Persona. She was trying to convince me to give P4 a shot, and eventually Naoto came up. I kept referring to Naoto as a guy, and she went along with it for a while, then accidently tripped up and spoiled the fact that it was a girl. Mind you, I had never heard Naoto speak, so I didn't have the obvious audio queue that it was a reverse trap. I then started wondering why I had been so certain that Naoto was male originally.
It dawned on me that I had seen Minato's character design a handful of times in the past, even though I had never played Persona 3 or even payed any modicum of attention to it, and mentally blurred that Persona's blue-haired, short-haired character with the one from its sequel, and whenever I had seen images of Naoto with big tits I had simply written it off as rule 63. It's weird how outsider assumptions can get so thoroughly BTFO when you only see surface-level images of a series for years, then actually look into it and see what's going on. I was completely certain Naoto was just some Minato genderswap that must have gone viral on Pixiv at some point or something.
