Because League showed up on the market at a good time when people were still putting up with limitations in the warcraft 3 engine for dota.
Nothing went wrong but when people have been playing league for like 5 year and dota 2 was still in beta, there's no incentive to switch and learn a new game (especially when things like the jungle are a whole different experience).
