I'd like to have a rational discussion regarding Nintendo in 2016. It's the start of the year so it's also the most fun to speculate. As well all know Nintendo had a lackluster year last year, despite having great games like Splatoon, Mario Maker, Triforce Heroes, Chibi Robo Zip-lash and of course Xenoblade Chronicles X and to a lot of people it just felt like a tranitional year.
I firmly believe 2016 is THE year for Nintendo. It is going to be the biggest of quite possibly all time. And I'm not just talking about game releases here -- Hell, STRONGLY believe NX is coming in 2017... I'll get to that later. No. Starting with either a Nintendo direct this month (Crossing my fingers) and or the big Nintendo investors meeting that will take place at the end of this month I believe we'll have a rough draft of what's likely in store for them.
We're talking about Nintendo going mobile, their new account system, fucking a new console, non-video game media and so much more. This is the recreation of Nintendo year. They will be reborn as a different beast. Will they be successful? I don't know. But what we do know is they are ready to change who and what they are.
Nintendo is gearing up for change and I think that's the general theme of this year for all major companies. Change. What did Reggie say last year at E3? He said something about transformation. And that happened in the worst possible way with Iwata's death. But Nintendo will grow from it and become better.

Anyway as I was saying with Nintendo getting ready to transform into a new beast so is Sony with their Morpheus and I have to say as a fan of both I'm quite excited to see where they are taking it.
Nintendo will no longer just be about games and this is the first year in what's likely going to be a permanent endeavor. We're going to see things we would have likely never imagined. We're going to see likely cartoons, webcomics, comics, live action tv shows, and likely movie announcements from Nintendo from now on.
But that's beside the point. This is also going to be an incredible year for games as a Nintendo fan. With amazing titles like Starfox, Paper Jam, Fire Emblem hitting early in the year sets a precident that I am very hopeful this year.
Nintendo is fucking LOADED with releases. And putting the NX on the backburner for a year will mean THAT will be loaded as well.
I'm making a bold statement. There will be 2-3 big releases every month this year from Nintendo either through localization or entirely brand new releases.

I believe the auto scroll wheel is them trying to attempt to innovate the whole weapon wheel thing. It's pretty much one of the most universally accepted systems of inventory management and if Nintendo builds that directly into their controller thus streamlining the entire process then I gotta say good on them.
I just hope it's not too intrusive but honestly it won;t be. It's to further show that controllers can be innovated in smaller ways that make a huge impact on how you see them. Most people are just happy using the right stick but this will likely be used by every other controller maker as well -- if it hits off and well liked by devs, of course which it likely is going to be.
Cloud computing is interesting... I'm honestly not a big fan of having to rely on the internet to get better visuals but if it's going to lengthen the life of the console then I guess I'll accept it. We've yet to see the xbox one do it satisfyingly but that will change with crackdown probably/ We'll see
it's an interesting concept. I'm all for it it's just I hope they don't half ass it. And with the new Nintendo accounts this year and mobile Nintendo is obviously going cloud. You will be able to upload your savefiles on the cloud.
Pokemon Bank was likely their beta. Their test in the waters and that was recieved very well. So it should be interesting to see how they do it. But let's not expect it to be a free service.

How do you know? Is there a list of release dates somewhere? #FE doesn't even have a release date in the west and FE: Fates doesn't have a release day on Europe either (although I suspect it'll release in April, like Awakening alongside StarFox).
I am still a strong believer that they will release the NX the year, 2015 definitely felt like they were pushing all their B-Teams to work on something to not piss off consumers, while the A-Teams were working on the actual games that we didn't get and most of 2016 so far is either games that were already released in Japan or stuff we've known for quiet a while.

If theres one thing, ONE FUCKING THING, for Nintendo to learn, its that you need to have faith in new IPS for them to take off. The reason Splatoon was so successful was because it had a massive amount of press behind its release to back up its good gameplay.
The reason stuff like Codename Steam, Wonderful 101, and Yokai Watch failed wasnt because of bad gameplay, it was because Nintendo put literally no press behind them. If your going to make a new IP you have to push it, dont just leave it dead in the water and expect people to buy it.

By social elements, I mean interacting with other players, from encouraging couch co-op to things like mii-verse. Part of the Wii's strength was getting multiple people around a single screen and having them work together, or fight Agilent each other. There's a reason so many of the earliest arcade games were competitive, people find games that they can enjoy with friends engaging even if they are otherwise not huge into games.

I just beat Dream Team and I'm excited for Paper Jam. Hopefully they'll clean up TP HD by the time it comes out so I might check that out as well. Gonna give FE Awakening a try and if I like it I'll pick up one of the Fates games later in March.
I half expect Zelda, Pikmin, and Starfox to get delayed again. I dunno about all this "transforming into a new beast" stuff, though. I mean it's good to see them expand but with half the shit they're planning I do I feel like they're gonna fuck it up in one way or another due to outdated attitudes and general "WE'RE ALWEAYS RIGHT AND YOU'RE WRONG" stubbornness.
I don't really see the point of the new "Nintendo Account" stuff unless they address NNID's biggest problem which is that digital purchases are tied to the console itself and not your actual account like XBLA and PSN. I have had plenty of friends and family members who have lost a lot of digital purchases simply because of this problem alone. Eventually we just hit a point where we refused to make digital purchases unless a physical copy of a game was difficult to locate or a game was an eshop exclusive. There's frankly no excuse for it when everybody else has gotten it figured out at this point.
I would like to know more about the NX before I make any sort of prediction or judgement call. If the rumors of being more powerful than PS4 or Xbox one are true, that's great so long as the games take full advantage of the system's power and it's not relegated to shovelware. I don't really mind the the whole "screen on the controller design" since I'm pretty well accustomed to two screens on Nintendo systems since 2004. The whole "2-in-1 handheld and home console hybrid" thing seems interesting but Nintendo's had a histroy of making big promises with console hardware and then not delivering save for maybe one or two exemplary games at the end of the console's lifespan. It looks nothing more than a "make a Mii and then bug your friends with pokes and IM's teehee ehl oh ehlg excks dee". I'm not saying Nintendo should go full blown retarded and simply port existing games with freemium purchases but there are franchises like Warioware that would be perfect in a smartphone game format yet the Big N wants to stay hush hush like they always do.
The whole "media expansion" thing seems sketchy but I think it could be really awesome if handled well and Nintendo loosens their titanium grip on their IPs while ensuring that they're handled well by third parties. I would welcome shit like Mario or other Nintendo characters being in Wreck-it Ralph 2 or stuff like a Saturday-morning Splatoon cartoon. Movies and TV shows have potential with Nintendo brands, but they need to be executed well.
I feel neutral about the whole theme park thing because I don't really travel that often.
I don't think 2016 will be "le big epic win" year for Nintendo, but they do have new waters to tread and there are a few interesting games coming out. Don't really feel comfortable giving them the benefit of the doubt since they have clearly demonstrated their stubborn attitude with a history of bad business decisions.
If Nintendo really wanted to win my heart, they wouldn't delay Zelda anymore and release the fucking game, announce Animal Crossing on WiiU THAT ISN'T DUMB SPINOFF SHIT, put a Mario Paint-esque game on WiiU that isn't a VC port of SNES Mario Paint, and either cool it with the amiibo or shit or add more interesting features to either the figures themselves or the games.
